HISTORY OF EDINBORO
The Borough of Edinboro is a thriving rural community and college town with unique shops, commercial districts and
numerous eateries. Edinboro becomes a lake resort during the summer months, offers nearby downhill skiing in winter
and features year-round recreational and cultural opportunities. It is a place with a strong sense of community pride, and a
wonderful place to live, work, raise a family and even retire.
The areas now known as Edinboro and Washington Township were first inhabited by the Eriez, Iroquois and Cornplanter Native
American peoples. The region itself was a dense forest with no accessible roads. The Native Americans referred to the region as
Conneauttee, meaning “land of the living snowflake.”
In 1801, William Culbertson built a gristmill near the outlet of what was then known as Conneauttee Lake, subdivided a portion
of his 500-acre tract and established the beginnings of present-day Edinboro. As farmers brought their grain to the gristmill
and wood to the sawmill, a demand was created for other businesses, which were established on present Erie and Meadville
Streets close to the mills. The increase of businesses and residents turned this once open farmland into a thriving village.
Culbertson built the first school around 1825 and the first post office in 1837.
Many wished to name the village Washington, but there was already a town in the state of the same name. Ultimately,
they decided to name it in honor of the capital of the home country of the Culbertsons and other early settlers, Edinburgh,
Scotland. Following its incorporation as “Edinboro” in 1840, the village continued to grow rapidly.
The Edinboro Academy was founded in 1857 and was named a State Normal School in 1861. By the 1900s, an electric railway had
made its way between Erie and Edinboro, and through the first half of the century, Edinboro matured as a summer resort community.
Edinboro in the 21st century retains many of the charms of its past eras, including tree-lined streets and attractive older homes.
Thanks to numerous entrepreneurial business people, along with the presence of the University’s nationally acclaimed art
programs, the borough and surrounding areas have become a hub of creative enterprise in the region. Art galleries, individual
working artists and innovators, and producers of artisanal agricultural products such as maple syrup are becoming an
increasingly significant component of the local economy and culture. Today, Edinboro has a population of about 6,450, and
about an equal number live in new subdivisions and on rural tracts in nearby Washington Township.
Today, Edinboro continues to grow and prosper.
EDINBORO RECREATION
The centerpiece of Edinboro’s recreational opportunities is the beautiful 245-acre Edinboro Lake and its accompanying
parks and playgrounds. This picturesque lake includes a guarded beach, boating with unlimited horsepower, two free boat
launch ramps and public dock spaces. It is also a prime fishing location. The lake park area serves many people, including
summer vacationers, summer residents, permanent residents from Edinboro and surrounding areas and an ever-changing
population of University students.

Edinboro University was founded as the Edinboro Academy, a private training school for Pennsylvania teachers, by the region’s
original Scottish settlers. It is the oldest training institution west of the Allegheny Mountains and the second oldest in all of
Pennsylvania. In the beginning, Edinboro modestly consisted of one two-story building, six classrooms, three instructors, 110
students and a principal. That original building still stands — Academy Hall — and serves as the home of the undergraduate
admissions office. Edinboro now has 43 buildings on 585 acres with open fields, wooded areas and its own five-acre lake, with
locations in Erie and Meadville. Today, the academic focus at Edinboro goes well beyond the training of teachers. EU is now the
largest and most comprehensive institution of higher education in northwestern Pennsylvania.
