Special Needs Students: In order to receive academic accommodations, a student must provide documentation of a special need. This material should be provided by a licensed professional, such as a psychologist, psychiatrist, or family doctor. Professionals must provide a diagnosis and a specific description of the disability’s impact on the learning environment and recommended accommodations. You may need to sign a release form at your school or doctor’s office in order for those records to be sent to Karen DeGrange, Disability Services Coordinator, at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. The documented information should be no older than 3 years. Please send as much information as possible to support your request for accommodations Guidelines for students with special needs: 1. You must provide detailed documentation to the Disability Services Coordinator (Karen DeGrange) before your eligibility for special academic accommodations can be evaluated and determined. 2. Once your materials are evaluated and you are determined to be eligible, each of your professors will be notified every quarter that you are eligible for academic accommodations. 3. However, it is YOUR responsibility to ask the professor in each class for accommodations. You should not be approached, singled out, or offered any accommodations until and unless you ask for it. 4. Be sure to ask for accommodations for a test at least 2 days before the test is to take place. Special arrangements must be made, and this takes time. 5. Please read the attached “Permission for Learning Center Testing Services” form, which will be required before taking a test in the Learning Center. 6. If you are ever denied a requested accommodation by a professor, please contact the Disability Services Coordinator immediately if you are not able to resolve the issue with the professor by yourself. 7. If there are other special academic accommodations to which you feel you are entitled (other than extra time and quiet room), please see the Disability Services Coordinator to discuss before approaching a professor. 8. Please READ every syllabus you receive carefully, and determine if you have any questions about the work in that class and how it may be impacted by your special situation. 9. Please be sure that you fully understand the ATTENDANCE policy in each class, as each professor may have his/her own unique requirements. 10.
