Kutztown University of Pennsylvania, a member of the State System of Higher
Education, was founded in 1866 and was originally named Keystone State Normal
School. Its name was changed to Kutztown State Teachers College in 1928 becoming
Kutztown State College in 1960, and ultimately achieving university status in 1983.
Today, KU is a modern, comprehensive institution, accredited by the Middle States
Commission on Higher Education, the Pennsylvania Department of Education,
NCATE, CSWE, NCACE, NASM, and NASAD.
LOCATION
Located on 289 acres in Kutztown, Pa. (population: 5,012), the university is 16 miles
from both Reading and Allentown, 70 miles from Philadelphia and 100 miles from
New York City. Lehigh Valley International Airport (ABE) is 25 minutes from
campus.
Enrollment
The KU campus has approximately 10,300 full- and part-time undergraduate and
graduate students. Most are Pennsylvania residents : 60% women, 40% men.
Academic Year
There are two 15-week terms, two summer sessions and one winter session.
Special Academic Programs
There are special academic programs including the Honors Program throughout
the undergraduate curriculum, the International Exchange and Study Abroad programs, freshmen seminars, independent study, internships, diversified academic
support services.
Faculty
Faculty are teaching-focused, with scholarly expertise. Many of the faculty have
engaged in research, writing, and consulting. At KU, 88% of the faculty have their
doctorate or terminal degree. We make sure each student gets the attention they
deserve with a student/faculty ratio of 20:1.

Library
With an array of useful resources, the Rohrbach Library is a modern, spacious
facility with wireless Internet access throughout the building. It boasts more than
555,000 books and bound periodicals; 65,000 print and electronic periodical subscriptions; 100 databases providing access to hundreds of thousands of e-books,
documents, reports, and images; more than one million microforms; maps, videos
and DVDs; state-of-the-art computer facilities; study rooms; computer and AV
equipment loans.
Special Facilities
There are many buildings to spark your imagination/creativity: a gallery, planetarium, observatory, TV production facilities, radio station, 40 computer labs containing 1,500 PC’s/Mac’s for student-use, cartography lab, smart classrooms, curriculum materials center, Ronald R. Rhein Environmental Study Area, Pennsylvania
German Cultural Heritage Center, Wallops Island marine science consortium
facility in Virginia.
Student Life
Kutztown University is filled with many welcoming clubs and organizations for
students to enrich their academic experience. The McFarland Student Union is
the heart of campus serving as the campus living room, with a movie theatre, radio
station, student organization office space and an information center. There are
more than 160 student organizations that cover an array of areas: Advisory councils, academic, campus media, diversified interest, Greek, performing arts, public
service, residency issues, social justice, spiritual, special interest, sports (intramural
and club programs), and visual arts affiliates. Musical entertainment, dances, lectures, comedy, excursions and cultural events round out the student life experience.
Additionally, the Student Recreation Center houses a rock climbing wall and provides fitness programs, racquetball courts, gymnasiums and fitness equipment.
Housing and Residential Services
Fourteen residence facilities (10 co-ed, one single gender, three modified coed) that
include three apartment-style, two suite-style, and nine traditional; accommodate
4,400 students. All residence halls are wired for cable TV, local phone service,
Internet and campus network access.
Alumni
75% of alumni live in Pennsylvania.

Financial Aid
Approximately 75% of students receive financial aid in the form of scholarships,
grants, loans or student employment.
Athletics
KU sponsors eight men’s intercollegiate sports (baseball, basketball, cross country,
football, tennis, indoor and outdoor track & field, and wrestling) and 13 women’s
sports (basketball, cross country, field hockey, golf, soccer, softball, swimming,
tennis, indoor and outdoor track & field, volleyball, lacrosse, and bowling). Athletic
facilities include swimming pool, football stadium, fieldhouse, weight room, playing
fields, tennis and basketball courts, indoor and outdoor track, a cross-country
course. KU is a member of NCAA Division II, PSAC.
