The graduate certificate
This one-year, five-course sequence of study is aimed at increasing the number of personnel qualified to provide early intervention
for Illinois children who are deaf and hard of hearing. Upon completion, candidates will have earned a Deaf and Hard of Hearing:
Listening and Spoken Language Professional graduate certificate from Illinois State University as well as having completed the core
knowledge competency areas needed to apply for the early intervention credential in Illinois.
Minimum admission criteria
Requirements include:
Course schedule
• Undergraduate degree from an accredited university
• Current deaf education, speech and language, or audiology
certification/licensure in Illinois (or currently completing
licensure/certification)
June 27–July 27, 2011 (No class June 30–July 5)
• Minimum two years of successful teaching or related service
experience
• Evidence of disposition for advanced study
A maximum of 12 applicants will be accepted into the program this
year. Preference will be given to applicants who are bilingual, from
underrepresented populations, or from high-need geographic areas.

Tuition scholarships and stipends provided to accepted applicants.
SED 405: Listening and Spoken Language Methods
for Young Children Who are Deaf and Hard of
Hearing
September 2011–April 2012
SED 498: Professional Practice in Deaf Education—Deaf and
Hard of Hearing: Listening and Spoken Language
Professional; an individually designed course that
requires six Saturday seminars, professional practice
field observations, and other projects as agreed upon
between student and supervisor
