Academic Warning, Probation, and Dismissal of Undergraduate
Students
A. Purpose
The purpose of this policy is to define the standards for good academic standing, academic
warning, academic probation, and dismissal of undergraduate students for poor academic
performance.
B. Scope
This policy applies to all undergraduate students.

Good Academic Standing – maintaininga student is in good academic standing if he or she a
minimumhas a CGPA ofr 2.00 or higher
for all work taken at Kutztown University2.00 or higher.
Warning, Probation, and Dismissal – actions taken by Kutztown University when a student’s
CGPA falls below good academic standing at the end of the fall or spring term. The University
will notify, in writing, each student who is on warning and probation or who is dismissed for
academic reasons. Academic warning, probation, and dismissal take effect immediately at the end
of the fall or spring term. No student will go on academic warning or probation, or be dismissed
from the University for academic reasons, at the end of the summer or winter session. However, a
student may attain good academic standing at the end of the summer or winter session and go off
warning or probation.

ACADEMIC WARNING

Any student falling below the 2.00 CGPA at the end of any Fall or Spring semester will be placed
on academic warning effective the next semester of attendance. A student is allowed only one
semester of academic warning in his/her academic career at Kutztown University. Part-time
students will be evaluated every 12 credits with the completion of 24 credits and will receive an
academic warning whenever this evaluation shows their CGPA to have fallen below 2.00.
A student is allowed only one semester of academic warning in his/her academic career at
Kutztown University.
In an academic warning semester, the student:
•
Is not considered to be in good academic standing.
•
Is prohibited from participating in any sporting organization activity or leadership
positions in student organizations.
•
Is required to contact the Department of Academic Enrichment and to use academic
support services to remediate academic difficulties.
•
May register for no more than 15 credits for the subsequent semester.

Students earning a 0.00 CGPA at the end of their first semester of full-time enrollment, not the
result of receiving an “I” or “W” grade, will be dismissed from the University.
Academic warning in the spring is not effective if the student takes courses during the winter and
attains a CGPA of 2.0. Academic warning in the fall is not effective if the student takes courses
during the summer and attains a CGPA of 2.0
GOOD STANDING
Undergraduate students must meet the following minimum GPA requirements for continuing
enrollment in good standing:
A cumulative GPA of 2.00 or higher is required of all students by the end of their second fulltime semester or at the completion of 24 semester hours for part-time students at Kutztown
University. Students earning a GPA lower than 2.00 at the completion of their first semester will
receive a LETTER OF NOTIFICATION indicating the student is not meeting university standards.
ACADEMIC WARNING
If, at the completion of the second semester or any subsequent semester, a student's cumulative
GPA falls below 2.00, he or she will not be in good academic standingAny student falling below
the 2.00 CGPA at the end of any Fall or Spring semester semester will be placed on academic
warning and will receive an Academic Warning effective the next semester of attendancefor the
following semester. Part-time students will be evaluated every 12

May register for no more than 15 credits for the subsequent semester. With permission of
the Department Chair of the Student's program or the Department of Academic
Enrichment, a student may register for more credits.

ACADEMIC PROBATION
A student who falls below the 2.00 CGPA after one full-time semester of Should the CGPA of any

DISMISSAL
A student who falls below the 2.00 CGPA after one full-time semester of probation will be
dismissed from the University. Dismissal letters are sent out at the end of the fall and spring
semesters.
A student dismissed from the university must petition the Undergraduate Exceptions Committee
(UEC) for an additional semester of academic probation prior to readmission.
If a student has been granted probation and falls below the 2.00 CGPA after one full-time
semester of probation, the student will be dismissed. Dismissal letters are sent at the end of the
fall and spring semesters.
Dismissal in the spring is not effective if the student takes courses during the summerwinter and
attains a CGPA of 2.0. Dismissal in the fall is not effective if the student takes courses during the
wintersummer and attains a CGPA of 2.0
READMISSION OF DISMISSED STUDENTS
A student dismissed from the Uuniversity must petition the Undergraduate Exceptions
Committee (UEC) for an additional semester of academic probation prior to readmission.
A student dismissed from the University may not take course work at the University until he/she
applies and is considered for readmission by the University.
Students readmitted to the University will have a maximum of two full-time semesters (24-30
credits) to reach a CGPA of 2.00. During that time, the student must maintain a CGPA of at
least 2.0 for each semester of work following readmission. Failure to maintain a CGPA of 2.0
for each semester until the CGPA reaches 2.00 or higher will result in a second dismissal. Any
student who is dismissed from the University for failure to maintain a CGPA of 2.0 a second
time is not eligible for future readmission.

If a student has made progress toward academic good standing in the last semester of attendance,
the student can petition the Undergraduate Exceptions Committee to receive one semester of
extended probation. If a student has been granted extended probation and falls below the 2.00
CGPA after one full-time semester of extended probation, the student will be dismissed.
Dismissal letters are sent at the end of the fall and spring semesters.
READMISSION OF DISMISSED STUDENTS
A student dismissed from the University may not take course work at the University until
he/she applies and is considered for readmission by the University. No student will be

considered for readmission earlier than one full calendar year after the time of dismissal.
Students readmitted to the University will have a maximum of two full-time semesters (24-30
credits) to reach a CGPA of 2.00. During that time, the student must maintain aC GPA of at
least 2.02.30 for each semester of work following readmission. Failure to maintain a CGPA of
2.02.30 for each semester until the CGPA reaches 2.00 or higher will result in a second
dismissal. Any student who is dismissed from the University for poor academic performance a
second time is not eligible for future readmission.A student dismissed from the University
following a semester of Academic Probation may seek readmission only under unusual
circumstances. Although it is unlikely that a student would be readmitted following academic
dismissal, in special situations the student may petition the Undergraduate Exceptions
Committee to consider a request for readmission and waiver of academic policy under the
following conditions:
• Petition for readmission must include a clear statement and evidence
indicating the student's potential for academic success.

• If the petition is approved, the student shall be re-admitted on Academic Probation
for one semester and must comply with all standing restrictions of Academic
Probation in addition to and requirements imposed by the Undergraduate Exceptions
Committee.

•
If, by the beginning of the following semester in which the student is under Academic
Probation, the student's cumulative GPA has not reached a 2.00, the student will be dismissed
from the University. Under policy of the University, dismissal is effective immediately before
the beginning of the next regular semester. If a student under Academic Probation earns the GPA
required for good standing, but then again falls below the required minimum GPA, the student
will automatically be dismissed.
