Present: Chuck Holcombe (History), Jim McCullagh (Social Work), Andrew Gilpin
(Psych), Tim Strauss (Geography), Elaine Eshbaugh (SAHS—Vice chair and secretary),
Taifa Yu (Political Science), Cyndi Dunn (SAC--Chair), Richard Featherstone (Interim
Associate Dean), Brenda Bass (Interim CSBS Dean)
Crew, Li, Baker, Rhineburger-Dunn, and Briggs are present from Dept of SAC regarding
proposed curriculum changes. Barnes and Lynch are present from SAHS regarding
proposed curriculum changes.
1. Minutes from Feb. 11, 2013, approved with minor correction (20-25 students in
Cornerstone sections rather than 20)
2. Status of elections
a. Need senator for university senate: 3 year term
i. CAN be from a unit that is already represented
b. Need someone for LAC committee; Dunn has spoken to Gute from SAHS
who may be interested
c. Need someone for Graduate Council
3. Curriculum
a. SAC
i. Anthropology
1. Minor changes
a. Drop course that hasn’t been taught
b. Minor change in pre-req in ANTH 3103 Religion,
Magic, and Witchcraft
c. New course: ANTH 2401 Tribal Religions—
focuses on selected global tribes
2. Motion to approve ANTH changes; motion passes
ii. Criminology
1. Change “fall” to “variable” for White Collar Crime CRIM
2112
2. Change of pre-req for Ethics course CRIM 3314
3. Change in minor; any course with CRIM prefix can
count—intended to minimize student requests and give
students more options
4. Certificate changes to Crime Mapping and Analysis
Certificate—removing two courses and adding two courses
based on what is being offered and anticipated future
offerings
5. Motion to approve CRIM changes; motion passes
iii. Sociology
1. Several courses have pre-req changes to make pre-reqs
consistent
2. New course proposals
a. Adding internship option for SOC students SOC
4485
b. Adding pro-seminar type of course (Career and
Professional Development SOC 4200)
i. Will teach professional skills
ii. Will give students more applied choices
iii. 1-3 credit hours? Dunn will check with SAC
curriculum chair
c. Course change to SOC 4071 Feminist Theory:
adding new option(s) as a pre-req
d. Major restatement: adding more options and
simplifying the major, less categorization
3. Motion to approve SOC changes; motion passes
b. SAHS
i. Counseling COUN 6291: change in number of credits for
internship, “clean up” change
ii. Family Studies & Gerontology
1. The Money Course FAM SERV 1075: elective course that
doesn’t count for any major or minor; 1 credit
2. Family Financial Counseling and Literacy FAM
3175/5175: new course that has been taught experimentally
3. Families and End of Life Issues FAM SERV/ GERO 2111:
new course that has been taught experimentally through
Continuing Education; focuses on more “applied”
examination of death and dying
4. Changes in major/minors in Gero and Family reflect new
courses
5. Motion to approve Family & Gero curriculum changes;
motion passes
iii. TAPP
1. Drop Intro to TAPP and replace with TEXDSGN 1004
Fashion Culture and Industry
a. This is being reviewed as a LAC category 5 course
as well
2. Change course name from Intro to Textile Materials to
Textile Science
a. Not a content change, just title
b. Dunn will see if she can change “short” title which
was not changed in system
3. Fashion Trend Analysis: change of pre-req due to change
of intro course to TEXDSGN 1004
4. Fashion Design: Flat Pattern and Draping--name change to
reflect what is taught in course
5. Major and minor restated to reflect the above changes
6. Motion to approve TAPP curriculum changes; motion
passes
iv. Interior Design
1. Four very minor changes in course descriptions, “clean up”
changes to INTDSGN 2063, 2067, 3065, and 3127
2. Motion to approve ID curriculum changes; motion passes
4. Comments from the Dean
a. Featherstone is keeping a close eye on enrollment numbers
b. Yu brings up Cornerstone and our continuing Cornerstone discussion
i. Looking for data (perhaps from FOE) to support Cornerstone;
Dunn will ask Chatham-Carpenter
ii. This is not a consultation; we are being asked to “approve”
c. Good showing for CSBS and UNI as a whole at Panther Caucus Day
d. Bartlett Hall on schedule as far as Bass knows
e. WGS curriculum passed last Monday; Geography is up next Monday
f. Comments on budget
i. No salary savings from Price Lab—just program and building
savings
ii. McCullagh comments that tearing down Price Lab will be costly
iii. Bass believes we are better off this year compared to last year in
terms of budger
g. New president will be on campus next week
