Learning arena, instructions and assignments Page 1 of 2 Field learning arena: Instructions and attitudes… How do we work at Svalex? Safety is the most important issue at Svalex. No injury is the first priority. Be responsible and aware! Learning arena: The small oil company in the field. You are the teacher: We are moving the learning arena into the field, and you are the teacher in your field of study. You are going to make your coworkers in other fields of study understand what you do in this project and why your job is important – basic and fundamental facts of your trade. Cross-disciplinary learning is a key goal of this field trip to Svalbard Geoscientists should understand the main engineering reasoning, and all engineers should understand the important geo-scientific reasoning. Understanding the main aspects of all disciplines is important to be able to make a good interpretation and use of the company resources. The sooner you realize this, the better job you will do in your company and in industry. We challenge you to be active and engaged. During Svalex we will work in groups. Each group is a small oil company and should have knowledge in all disiplines: Geology, geophysics, petrophysics, drilling reservoir engineering and production. At Svalex – by experiencing – you are supposed to find out how you can cooperate with other people and disciplines. You should learn as much as possible – while in the field – through discussions with your fellow students. You will give presentations. In the different parts of the Svalex projects, each discipline should prepare contributions in their field of study. To ensure learning, participation and involvement of each discipline, each oil company should establish routines to hear reports and contributions from all group participants. Do you find yourself passivated? Do not accept to be passive – ask and get involved. There will be consultants around that you can talk to and discuss your concerns. You should also talk to your company management or students with similar background to yours in other companies. The students who are active and engaged will benefit most from this field trip. Data: Study the data available on the resource CD. In making a report to your company, you will have to study and interpret all available data: Papers, seismic data, geological models and descriptions, flash presentations, maps, field studies, reservoir simulations. The Svalbard field simulator, Svalsim may be very useful. 1. Your role and responsibilities. What is your role in this field trip – what are your responsibilities? You should define these and discuss it with your colleagues in other companies as well. Cross company forums for discussions may be needed and useful in your work to understand your role in the project. This project is typical for what an oil company is doing. All disciplines have to contribute and should think: What should come from me? 2. Your small oil company badly needs new hydrocarbon prospects. The Storvola reservoir is a high potential reservoir that your company has decided to explore, and hopefully develop and produce. The studies of the other locations in Billefjorden and at Festningen may help to understand different geological settings and help you to understand how these settings influence your work in the area. 3. Organize your company. Be sure to organize your small oil company in an efficient way. Every day there will be information given from the management of the expedition to the management of the attending oil companies. An important success factor is to organize your company in an efficient way, and secure the flow of information both ways between the management and the staff. 1_Short_Svalex-INTRO_Teaching_consepts_Ver-8.docx 5. The teachers can be looked upon as consultants. They can be asked to consult. They do not, should not and often can not – provide “the answer” – they are there to help – to facilitate – your own reasoning. We encourage you to use all available resources – human (do not hesitate to ask people from other companies) as well as written and electronic resources. Explore the opportunities – not the limitations. 6. Limits put on you. Being in the field, you may experience limitations in what you have planned to do. Weather conditions may be bad, and you can not gather all the information you wanted to. But the time limit for reporting about the prospects is very short – this is the only option and chance to gather field data in time. If weather conditions are bad, you may have to rely more on other available resources available on board the ship. 7. Critical eye… Remember that when you start working with older data, you should always look at the data with a critical eye – there may be errors in the data. May be re-analysis by newer methods can improve the quality? -2-
