WHO IS ELIGIBLE FOR
UPWARD BOUND (UB)?
9th- and 10th- grade students attending one of
BRCC’s Upward Bound Target Schools - Istrouma
High and McKinley High - are eligible if they meet
any of the following requirements:
•
They must be potential first-generation
college graduates (neither parent/guardian has earned a Bachelor’s degree)
•
They must meet the definition of lowincome participants, based on guidelines
set by the federal government.
•
They must show an academic need for the
program services.
Students interested in participating in the Upward
Bound Program may request an application from their
high school counselor or contact the Upward Bound
Office at Baton Rouge Community College.

What is Upward Bound?

provides support
to qualified
participants in their
preparation for college. The
program serves potential
first-generation college
graduates attending one of our target high schools.
The goal of Upward Bound is to increase the rate at
which participants complete secondary education, and
strengthen their chances of successfully enrolling and
graduating from institutions of post secondary education.
The Upward Bound Program provides the following
FREE services to the participants:
• Academic advising
• Academic instruction
• Career planning
• College tours and field trips
• Access to the College’s library and
technology center
• Community service opportunities
• Cultural events
• Financial aid workshops
• Job-shadowing opportunities
• Stipends
• Tutoring and Counseling services
WHAT IS REQUIRED OF AN
UPWARD BOUND STUDENT?
Academic Year Session
Upward Bound’s academic year sessions are held
each Saturday on the campus of Baton Rouge
Community College. Instruction is provided in
English, mathematics, science, computer science,
critical thinking skills, and character development. Stipends are provided to participants
attending Saturday academic sessions.
Summer Session
During the summer component, Upward Bound students
are exposed to both the
academic and social aspects
of college life, with a full day
of academic activities scheduled Monday through Friday.
Emphasis will be placed on
improving English, foreign
language, math, and science
skills. Classes are designed to enhance learning,
increase knowledge in academic subjects needed
for the successful completion of high school, and
improve participants’ chances of successfully
completing a college degree. Students will also
be exposed to SAT/ACT preparation, academic
planning, art enrichment (music, photography,
etc), career assessment inventories, community
service activities, trips, guest speakers, and career
opportunities.
