Baton Rouge Community College Residency Information
The Office of Enrollment Services determines residency of a student in accordance with BRCC regulations, using the
information provided on a student’s Application for Admission and related documents. Other factors used to determine
residency include:
A continuous presence in Louisiana while not enrolled in a technical school, college or university.
Payment of Louisiana income taxes during the past tax year.
Living in Louisiana for a year or longer or having a driver’s license or ID, does not automatically qualify you for in-state
tuition. Despite the length of time you attend, residency cannot be established for the sole purpose of obtaining an
education. Residency status and fees are audited. Residency reclassification requests are not retroactive and are not
processed after classes begin for the term of application.
Louisiana Residents
Students are eligible for consideration as Louisiana residents once they have:
1) resided and/or worked in Louisiana for at least one full year (365 days) prior to the first official day of classes of
the term prior to applying to attend school, AND
2) filed a Louisiana state tax return.
Special provisions are made for students who are mandatorily relocated to Louisiana for employment purposes. Students
with valid resident-alien cards are evaluated by the same standards as U.S. citizens when determining Louisiana residency
status. Lease agreements, utility bills, W-2 forms and check stubs do not constitute verification of residency status.
Residency is not transferable from other colleges/ universities.
Non-Louisiana Residents
Students who are not Louisiana residents are charged out-of-state tuition. For applicants who are under 18 years of age or
are legal dependents, residency is determined by the domiciles of students’ parent(s) or legal guardian(s).
Non-U.S. Citizens (International)
International students are non-U.S. citizens who do not possess valid permanent-resident cards. International students are
charged out-of-state tuition.
Residency for Veterans, National Guard Members & Reservists
ACT 581 calls for Louisiana public universities to consider the following students as residents for tuition purposes
although they are not Louisiana residents.
Veterans who served on active duty for a continuous period of not less than two years, received an Honorable
Discharge and who are enrolled in at a public Louisiana university within one year of discharge.
Current members of the National Guard or one of the reserve components (e.g., Army Reserve, Air Force
Reserve, Navy Reserve, etc.).
Veterans with a service-connected disability as determined by the United States Department of Veterans Affairs.
