Multi-Faculty Degree Regulations: Bachelor of General Studies

1.
Interpretations
In these regulations unless the contrary intention appears 'approved' means approved by the board of management;
'board of management' means the Bachelor of General Studies board of management;
'candidate' means candidate for the degree;
'degree' means the degree of Bachelor of General Studies;
'faculty board' means the faculty board of the Faculty of Arts.
'information handout' means the Faculty of Arts handbook or such other publication
whether in bound, loose leaf or electronic form concerning the course of study as the
faculty board determines from time to time.
'year level' in relation to a subject means University, or other approved equivalent, year
level.

The faculty board, on the advice of the board of management, may from time to
time with the approval of the Academic Board determine any matter or thing
relating to the requirements of the degree including but not limited to 2.1.1
subjects that may, subject to these regulations, be credited towards the
degree;
2.1.2
subject sequences; and
2.1.3
the credit points attributable to each subject.
The faculty board must cause all determinations under this section to be
published in an information handout.
Subjects for credit

3.1
Except where the faculty board, on the advice of the board of management, in
any particular case otherwise determines, the subjects which may be credited
towards the degree must come from one of the following groups –
Humanities - Social Sciences
Science - Technology
Business - Commerce, and
Professional Education.
3.2
The subjects that the faculty board may determine to be subjects for credit
towards the degree may include 3.2.1
subjects offered through the Open Learning Agency of Australia Pty Ltd;
3.2.2
subjects taken 3.2.2.1
as part of a degree or diploma course; or
3.2.2.2
as non award subjects –
in the university or in any other approved tertiary institution;

3.2.3
subjects taken as part of an advanced certificate or associate diploma
course in a College of Technical and Further Education; and
3.2.4
any other subjects designated by the board of management.
3.3
The faculty board on the advice from the board of management may, in any
particular case, allow a credit in respect to professional education of up to twelve
credit points at a specified year level, for appropriate professional experience.
3.4
In paragraph 3.2.2 'non award subjects' means subjects prescribed for a degree or
diploma taken by a person who is not a candidate for that degree or diploma and
in respect of which credit was not granted towards the degree or diploma.
Credit points
4.1
To qualify for the award of the degree a person must be credited by the board of
management with subjects valued at a total of not less than 144 credit points.
4.2
Of the 144 credit points required to qualify for the award of the degree 4.2.1
at least 48 must be from subjects taught by the university or designated
as Monash subjects by the board of management;
4.2.2
at least 96 must be from four minor sequences; and

no more than 72 may be from first year level subjects and the balance
must be from second year level subjects or higher.
For the purpose of these regulations a minor sequence is a sequence of subjects
in two parts 4.3.1
being first year level subjects followed by second year level subjects or
second year level subjects followed by third year level subjects, with the
subjects of each year level totalling at least 12 credit points; and
4.3.2
with, at least one first year level subject from each of the four subject
groups specified in subsection 3.1 and the remaining subjects from at
least three of those four specified groups, except where the board of
management in any particular case otherwise determines.
Enrolment not required
A person may undertake subjects for the degree whether or not he or she is an enrolled
candidate for the degree and may satisfy the requirements for the degree without
necessarily at any time being an enrolled candidate.

Time limits
Unless otherwise determined by the board of management in any particular case,
studies in respect of subjects to be credited towards the degree may extend over a
period of no more than 10 years.
7.
Satisfaction of requirements
A person who has been certified by the faculty board on the advice of the board of
management as having satisfied the requirements of the degree qualifies for the award
of the degree.
8.
Changes in regulations and degree requirements
8.1
Subject to this section, the requirements for the degree will be governed by these
regulations and by any additional degree requirements determined by the faculty
board under section 2, as in force or published from time to time.
8.2
Where the faculty board considers that an enrolled candidate has, since first
enrolling for the degree, been unreasonably adversely affected by any change in
the regulations or degree requirements, the faculty board must permit the
candidate to qualify for the degree under the regulations or in accordance with
the degree requirements in force at some time during candidature provided the
faculty board is satisfied that the work so completed is equivalent in standard to
that currently required to complete the course of study.
