Made by the Academic Board

Part I - General
1.
Interpretation
In these regulations unless the contrary intention appears –

1.1.1
all defined terms shall have the meaning given in the doctorate regulations;
1.1.2
degree means the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and includes the degree in a
specialty.
Admission to candidature
An applicant for admission to candidature must have qualified in the University for 2.1.1
a masters degree by research; or
2.1.2
a degree of bachelor with honours I, or honours II division A, -
or have qualifications which in the opinion of the committee are equivalent or a
satisfactory substitute.
3.
Study program
Subject to the approval of the committee and head in each particular case, a study
program may include units constituting no more than 34% of the study program in
total.
4.
Oral examination
In any case it deems appropriate, the committee may require a candidate, after
submission of a thesis, to undertake an oral examination.
5.
Staff candidates
5.1
In this section member of staff means a person who 5.1.1
holds an academic appointment at 0.5 fraction or above or an adjunct
appointment; and
5.1.2
has held that appointment at or above lecturer B level or equivalent
for a minimum of three years; or

5.1.3
is otherwise approved by the committee.
5.2
A member of staff may, if otherwise qualified under this part, apply for
admission to candidature as a staff candidate.
5.3
On the recommendation of the head and relevant faculty, the committee may
admit an applicant to candidature for the degree as a staff candidate.
5.4
In respect of a staff candidate 5.4.1
supervision is not mandatory however a supervisor, being a person
who is an experienced supervisor with at least level 2 accreditation,
may be appointed;
5.4.2
there is no minimum period of candidature, but at least 75% of the
thesis research work must be completed while the staff candidate is a
member of staff; and
5.4.3
no confirmation of candidature is required.
5.5
The thesis of a staff candidate must be submitted for examination while the
staff candidate continues to be a member of staff, unless the committee in any
particular case otherwise determines.
5.6
At the time a staff candidate submits a thesis for examination -
5.7
5.6.1
the staff candidate must submit a statement signed by the staff
candidate and by the dean (or nominee) affirming that the thesis
contains no work presented in contravention of subsection 19.3 of the
doctorate regulations; and
5.6.2
the dean (or nominee) must certify whether or not in his or her
opinion the thesis is properly presented and worthy of examination.
Except as expressly varied or modified by this section, the regulations apply to
staff candidates.
Part II - Visual Arts
7.
Speciality and interpretation
7.1
The degree of Doctor of Philosophy may be undertaken pursuant to this part in
the specialty of visual arts.
7.2
In this part degree means the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the specialty of visual
arts;
faculty board means the faculty board of the Faculty of Art, Design and
Architecture.

Study program
8.1
8.2
A study program must consist of 8.1.1
visual work and documentation; and
8.1.2
subject to section 3, three units.
For the purposes of a study program 8.2.1
the visual work must constitute a doctoral level contribution of
substantial cultural significance;
8.2.2
the documentation must include -
8.2.3

8.2.2.1
a permanent visual record of the visual work requirement;
and
8.2.2.2
written material supporting the visual work; and
three units must be undertaken, and satisfactorily completed, in a
specified order.
Credit for units
9.1
Where the faculty board is satisfied that a candidate has satisfactorily
completed work equivalent to work in one or both of the first two of the three
units in the study program, the faculty board may grant the candidate credit in
respect of the relevant work in the unit or units concerned.
9.2
This section is subject to section 12B of the doctorate regulations.
Thesis requirement
The visual work and documentation requirements of the degree are approved by the
committee as an alternative research component and, subject to this part subsection
12.4 of the doctorate regulations shall apply.
11.
Submission
A candidate satisfies submission requirements of the doctorate regulations by 11.1.1 presenting the visual work in an examination exhibition or in circumstances
deemed exceptional by the committee, in any other manner determined by
the committee; and
11.1.2 submitting the documentation for examination.
12.
Copies of documentation
Sections 19 and 25 of the doctorate regulations apply to and in relation to the
submission and lodging of copies of the documentation as if the documentation were a
thesis.

13.
Property in visual work
For doctoral purposes, the work of a candidate constituting the visual work
requirement of the degree is and remains the property of the candidate.
14.
Staff candidates
In relation to a staff candidate for the degree 14.1.1 for the purposes of paragraph 5.4.2, 75% of the visual work and
documentation requirements of the degree must be completed while the
candidate is a member of staff; and
14.1.2 the visual work requirement of the degree may include works previously
exhibited.
Part III - Music Composition
16.
Speciality and interpretation
16.1
The degree of Doctor of Philosophy may be undertaken pursuant to this part in
the specialty of music composition.
16.2
In this part degree means the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the specialty of music
composition;
faculty board means the faculty board of the Faculty of Arts.
17.
Admission
For the purposes of admission to candidature, to satisfy the degree requirement of
section 2, a degree must include a music composition component unless the faculty
board in any particular case otherwise determines.
18.
Study program
18.1
A study program:
18.1.1 must include research leading to a substantial folio of original music
compositions; and
18.1.2 subject to section 3, may include one or more unit.
18.2
A minimum of 50% of the music compositions in a folio must be performed in
public concerts and evidenced in concert program notes.
18.3
A folio of music compositions must also include a critical commentary on the
compositions and the concert program notes referred to in subsection 18.2.

19.
Thesis requirement
The folio requirement of the degree is approved by the committee as an alternative
research component and subject to this part subsection 12.4 of the doctorate
regulations shall apply.
Part IV - Creative Writing
20.
Specialty and interpretation
20.1
The degree of Doctor of Philosophy maybe undertaken pursuant to this part in
the specialty of creative writing.
20.2
In this part degree means the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the specialty of creative
writing;
faculty board means the faculty board of the Faculty of Arts.
21.
Study program
21.1
A study program:
21.1.1 must include research work, leading to one or more pieces of creative
writing and an exegesis; and
21.1.2 subject to section 3, may include one or more unit.
21.2
For the purpose of a study program –
21.2.1 the creative writing must constitute a doctoral level contribution of
substantial cultural significance; and
21.2.2 the exegesis must include a critical commentary on the creative writing
and explain its cultural significance.
22.
Admission to Candidature
In addition to the requirements of section 4 of the doctorate regulations, an
application for admission to candidature must be accompanied by the documentation
prescribed by the committee.
23.
Thesis requirement
The creative writing and exegesis requirements of the degree are approved by the
committee as an alternative research component and, subject to this part subsection
12.4 of the doctorate regulations shall apply.

Part V – Theatre Performance
24.
Specialty and interpretation
24.1
The degree of Doctor of Philosophy maybe undertaken pursuant to this part in
the specialty of theatre performance.
24.2
In this part degree means the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the specialty of theatre
performance;
faculty board means the faculty board of the Faculty of Arts.
25.
Study program
25.1
A study program:
25.1.1 must include research work, leading to an original performance project
and critical commentary in the practice genres of directing, theatre
making or dramatic writing; and
25.1.2 subject to section 3, may include one or more unit.
25.2
For the purpose of a study program –
25.2.1 the performance project embodies evidence of doctoral level research
into the practice genre: specifically, the social, historical, and
performance contexts of the project; the aesthetic elements of the
practice genre; and theoretical issues germane to the project; and
25.2.2 the critical commentary will provide a theoretically informed critical
analysis of the performance research project and will address
methodological and theoretical issues that arise during the research
investigation.
26.
Admission to Candidature
In addition to the requirements of section 4 of the doctorate regulations, an
application for admission to candidature must be accompanied by evidence of the
applicant’s performance work in the practice genre in which the candidate proposes to
research.
27.
Thesis requirement
The performance project and critical commentary requirements of the degree are
approved by the committee as an alternative research component and, subject to this
part subsection 12.4 of the doctorate regulations shall apply.

Part VI - Music Performance
28.
29.
Specialty and interpretation
28.1
The degree of Doctor of Philosophy maybe undertaken pursuant to this part in
the specialty of music performance.
28.2
In this part degree means the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the specialty
of music performance.
Admission to candidature
29.1
In addition to the requirements of section 4 of the doctorate regulations, an
application for admission to candidature must be accompanied by evidence of
the applicant's performance work in the practice genre in which the candidate
proposes to research and any other evidence, including documentation or
audio or audio-visual recording, prescribed by the committee.
29.2
An applicant for admission to candidature must have qualified, in music
performance or a related discipline, for:
29.2.1 a degree of bachelor with honours I or honours II division A;
29.2.2 a masters preliminary qualification with honours I or honours II division
A, which included a significant research component;
29.2.3 a course work masters degree with honours I or honours II division A,
which included a significant research component graded at a
distinction level or above;
29.2.4 a masters degree by research with honours I or honours II division A;
or
29.2.5 any other qualification which in the opinion of the committee is
equivalent or a satisfactory substitute.
29.3
30.
An applicant for admission to candidature must participate in an audition
process as determined by the committee.
Study program
30.1
A study program:
30.1.1 must include research work, leading to a performance project and an
exegesis; and
30.1.2 subject to section 3, may include one or more unit.
30.2
For the purpose of a study program 30.2.1 the performance project must constitute an original contribution to
performance research; and

30.2.2 the exegesis must demonstrate how the performance research
contributes towards the body of scholarly knowledge and must explain
the context and methodology of the performance research.
31.
Submission
A candidate satisfies the submission requirements of the doctorate regulations by 31.1.1 presenting a live performance of the performance project or in circumstances
deemed exceptional by the committee, in any other manner determined by
the committee; and
31.1.2 submitting an exegesis and an audio or audio-visual recording of the live
performance of the performance project, accompanied by any critical editions
and or transcriptions that may complement the exegesis,
for examination.
32.
Thesis requirement
The performance project and exegesis requirements of the study program are
approved by the committee as an alternative research component and, subject to this
part subsection 12.4 of the doctorate regulations shall apply.
Part VII - Translation Studies
33.
34.
Specialty and interpretation
33.1
The degree of Doctor of Philosophy may be undertaken pursuant to this part in
the specialty of translation studies.
33.2
In this part degree means the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the specialty
of translation studies.
Admission to candidature
34.1
An applicant for admission to candidature must have the qualifications as
described in section 2 or subsection 34.2.
34.2
An applicant who has qualified at an Australian or New Zealand university in
translation studies, literary or cultural and intercultural studies, for 34.2.1 a four year degree of bachelor with honours I or honours II division A;
34.2.2 a masters preliminary qualification with honours I or honours II division
A, which included a significant research component;
34.2.3 a coursework masters degree with honours I or honours II division A,
which included a significant research component graded at a
distinction level or above; or

34.2.4 a masters degree by research with honours I or honours II division A,
will be considered to have met the qualification requirements in section 2.
35.
Study program
35.1
A study program:
35.1.1 must include research work leading to a body of translated work and
an exegesis; and
35.1.2 subject to section 3, may include one or more unit.
35.2
For the purposes of a study program 35.2.1 the translation work shall involve the reappropriation and
recontextualisation of one or more texts and research concerning the
characteristics of the genre and influences of the context; and
35.2.2 the exegesis shall be a critical analysis of the translation and place the
text in its cultural, historical and aesthetic context.
36.
Submission
A candidate shall satisfy the submission requirements of the doctorate regulations by
submitting a body of translated work and an exegesis for examination.
37.
Thesis requirement
The translation and exegesis requirements of the study program are approved by the
committee as an alternative research component and, subject to this part subsection
12.4 of the doctorate regulations shall apply.
Part VIII - Journalism
38.
39.
Specialty and interpretation
38.1
The degree of Doctor of Philosophy may be undertaken pursuant to this part in
the specialty of journalism.
38.2
In this part degree means the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the specialty
of journalism.
Admission to candidature
39.1
In addition to the requirements of section 4 of the doctorate regulations, an
application for admission to candidature must be accompanied by evidence of
the applicant's practical work in the field of journalism or a related discipline.
39.2
An applicant for admission to candidature must have qualified at an Australian
or New Zealand university in journalism or a related discipline for Page|9

39.2.1 a bachelor degree, or equivalent international qualification, with an
overall result of honours II division A or higher;
39.2.2 a masters preliminary qualification with an overall result of honours II
division A or higher, which included a significant research component;
39.2.3 a coursework masters degree with an overall result of honours II
division A or higher, which included a significant research component
graded at a distinction level or above;
39.2.4 a masters degree by research with an overall result of honours II
division A; or
39.2.5 a qualification deemed equivalent by the committee.
40.
Study program
A study program –
40.1.1 must include a thesis which includes an exegesis; and
40.1.2 subject to section 3, may include one or more unit.
