Student Union & Activities promotes each student’s learning experience by offering a variety of
programs, activities, services, and facilities that, when taken together, represent a wellconsidered plan for the development of community at Texas Tech University.
The Student Union is the community center of the Texas Tech University campus. It provides an
environment for relaxation, social interaction, education and exchange of thoughts. It serves
Tech students, staff, faculty, alumni and the greater Lubbock community. Student Activities
complements the University’s academic programs. It enhances the overall educational
experiences of students through development of, exposure to, and participation in social,
cultural, multicultural, intellectual, recreational, traditional, community service, and campus
governance programs.
Student Union & Activities will create an environment that will foster and expand the feeling of
community on the Texas Tech University campus. We will provide a state of the art facility for the
use of campus; provide services that meet the daily needs of our constituents; and continue to
provide educational and entertainment activities to the campus community.

Basic Functions (4 positions available: 2 in Activities area and 2 in Operations area)
The Student Union & Activities Graduate Assistant, as an educator, works to provide direction for
student learning and academic success while assisting with the coordination of the advisory,
supervisory, programmatic, operational, and administrative facets of the Student Union.
The Graduate Assistant is a vital member of the university community and the Student Union &
Activities staff. The individual is expected to work with Coordinators, Assistant Directors, Associate
Directors, the Managing Director, and other departmental staff in the development and
implementation of programs, management, and learning initiatives for the entire Student Union
operation.
The Graduate Assistant enhances the growth and development of students directly and
indirectly by fostering opportunities for citizenship and community building; diversity; self worth
and esteem; life-long learning; and the synthesis of knowledge and practical skill development.
This individual will plan, advise, supervise, support, and implement a variety of programs,
products, and services to promote these values.
The Graduate Assistant will serve on departmental committees and task forces as assigned by
supervisory personnel and will have opportunities to create and implement intentional
experiences that support Student Union & Activities and the university mission, present programs,
participate in personal and professional development activities, and assist with collateral
assignments when requested.
Activities Area Related Responsibilities (2 positions available)

Advisement of Student Groups – Provides advisement to the university programming
board, Tech Activities Board (TAB), and various other Student Organizations, which
include, but are not limited to, on-site event support and implementation; recruitment
and selection; officer and member development; advisor relations; risk management;
grounds use; university operating procedures; and overall student group development.
Programming – Plan and implement large-scale programming for the Texas Tech
campus, which Include budgeting, contracting, promotions and marketing, event
management, and assessment. Programs may include, but are not limited to,
RaiderGate, Homecoming, Arbor Day, RaiderFest, University Outreach programs,
workshops, leadership conferences, and various other retreats as needed.
Operations Area Related Responsibilities (2 positions available)

Operations – Assist with the operation of the Student Union Building. Learn how building
mechanical systems work and how to control them. Become involved in special projects
involving entire building operations team as well as other departments such as the
Physical Plant. Become familiar with and knowledgeable of Student Union procedures
and operating policies, and professionally communicate them to various tenants and
guests as it relates to reservations, room set-up, custodial services, ticketing, solicitation,
and emergency preparedness.

Committee Responsibilities – Represent Student Union & Activities on departmental and
division committees as assigned; as well as the Student Union Advisory Board and
Student Organization Advisory Congress (SOAC).
Assessment & Research – Support and administer program or department assessments to
provide information on student learning outcomes. Research information and resources
for risk management; Recognition programs; and compliance with Council for the
Advancement of Standards in Higher Education (CAS).
Administrative Responsibilities – Assist with record keeping and historical archiving;
registration processes and roster management; semester grade report generation;
website development and management; and other generalist functions within Student
Union & Activities.
Requirements
A bachelor’s degree is required and candidates should have previous student affairs, student
activities or student leadership experience. This position is designed for the individual who is
pursuing a Master’s degree. At time of employment, candidates must be accepted into a
graduate degree program at Texas Tech University. Higher Education program is preferred. This
position is security sensitive. Applicants will be subjected to a police records check. All
candidates will be required to submit academic transcripts to verify education.
Remuneration
Graduate Assistants are appointed on an annual basis after an application, review and
interview process by the department. Successful applicants will be reviewed yearly for the
potential of a second year appointment. The department will offer a competitive scholarship to
the person(s) selected for the graduate assistant position(s). Full-time enrollment of 9 credit hours
a semester in a graduate program is required. Limited professional development funds are
provided for conference attendance.
Hours
25 hours per week. Graduate Assistants are expected to work all University workdays unless prior
arrangements have been made with their supervisor and all job responsibilities are completed.
Night and weekend hours are required at various times throughout the year.

Higher Education Program
Higher Education is one of six academic programs in the Department of Educational
Psychology and Leadership. The program is committed to preparing administrative and
instructional leaders for service at colleges and universities in both the public and private
sectors, generating and supporting research in the field of higher education, and delivering
public service to the practice of higher education.
The Master of Education program in Higher Education offers opportunities for individuals who
seek careers in middle management, teaching, and leadership positions at community
colleges and universities. A minimum of 39 semester credit hours is required for the Masters
program. Students have a thesis and a non-thesis option.
