Each year the ISPE UK affiliate uses this event as an opportunity to thank key individuals and companies that have provided essential support in the organisation and hosting of events such as the Communities of

Alzhiemer's Society is the UK's leading care and research charity for people with dementia, their families and carers. 1 in 3 people over 65 will die with a form of dementia and currently our services and research are critically underfunded. Anita Avery (Fundraiser
South) said “We would like to say a BIG thank you to the ISPE, the Southern committee and it's members for their generosity in helping us continue to help those who are living with dementia.”
This year we raised almost £3000 and the UK Affiliate and
Southern Committee would like to add their thanks to everyone who contributed.
The UK Affiliate Annual Awards Dinner was preceded by the Annual Conference and Exhibition.
The Conference entitled “Sustainability:
Application of the Principles in the
Pharmaceutical Industry” was chaired by
Bruce Davies, Principal Consultant,
Global Consulting.
The Conference provided the delegates from a cross section of pharmaceutical manufacturers and suppliers with a view of the current and future potential for environmental improvements in construction, facility management, process intensification and green chemistry
The Keynote Address was delivered by
Richard Parmenter of GSK who whilst looking at the key factors for environmental sustainability in the pharmaceutical industry also focussed on the role of the engineer and the trends seen in other industries.
Andrew Kinsey of Bovis Lend Lease gave the delegates a review of some major construction projects outside the pharmaceutical sector giving a number of innovative approaches to greener building.
Arup’s David Melon who is also acting
Chair of the Sustainability Community of
Practice presented a summary of the work being carried out by the CoP members and steering committee.
Con Leddy of PM Group provided an update of the Centocor facility which was the winner of the ISPE facility of the year award (sustainability) 2009 detailing the approach to the design and the real benefits achieved after more than a year of operation.
The EU perspective on approaches to sustainability and new initiative for
Pharmaceuticals in the Environment was presented by Mike Murray of the ABPI
Dr Martin Bigg of the Environmental
Agency provided a view of sustainability from a regulatory point of view, highlighting the role of the agency in helping as well as monitoring and controlling industry
Lorraine Murtagh of Pfizer and Kevin
O’Keefe of GSK both demonstrated their companies’ commitment to reducing the impact of manufacturing through green chemistry initiatives, detailing the benefits to the environment and also by way of cost savings.
Process intensification as a route to reducing the carbon footprint, whilst increasing capacity and flexibility was presented by Dr Peter McDonnell looking at a recent Genzyme case study
During the event a number of interesting ideas were highlighted and this provoked a lively discussion between the delegates and speakers.
The conference was supported by a well attended exhibition of suppliers to the pharmaceutical sector which was also open to early arrivals for evening event.
The UK currently has three very active Communities of Practice (CoPs), namely GAMP, Sustainable Facilities and PAT.
The CoP initiative was set up by the ISPE as an interactive on-line community to provide its members a forum for debate and exchange of information and this has been grasped by the active CoPs in the UK with information on the CoP websites and regular meetings in the UK and Ireland for members and the steering committees.
If you would like to find out more information on the full range of CoPs or to get involved then details can be found on the ISPE website
The UK Affiliate will be planning a number of full day and 2-day training events with ISPE certified trainers.
These training events planned to start with HVAC, will be arranged in two geographic locations (North and South) and are intended to provide convenient and cost effective access to the ISPE’s high quality training seminars.
More detail will be available on the ISPE
UK website ispe.org/UK as the programme develops
The ISPE UK affiliate and the CoPs are run on an entirely voluntary basis to provide a means of sharing knowledge and information through seminars, discussion events and web forum.
If you are able to contribute to one of the events or have ideas for future events you feel would be useful then please contact your regional chairman. Contact details are shown in the events diary.
