Chabot College Basic Skills Committee MINUTES August 27, 2013 Attendees: Becky Plaza, Carolyn Arnold, Jennifer Lange, Tram VuKumamoto, Michael Thompson, Rachael Tupper-Eoff, Michael Robinson, Jane church, Rani Nijjar, Matt Kritscher, Hisako Hintz, Jane Wolford, Marcia Corcoran Meeting was called to order at 12:05 PM Minutes: Minutes from May were not available. They will be provided on Sept. 10, 2013 for review. Committee Business: Trish shared information about the Student Success Conference and registration to attend. The BSC funding will support attendance for a substantial number of people as the cost to attend the conference is so low. The committee believes that counselors and people who are very active in various initiatives should go. Deans were asked to reach out to faculty and staff. Trish also highlighted other opportunities for training around the state, including two online courses for Reading Apprenticeship training. Trish provided the dates with some suggested presentations, including two presentations from Carolyn Arnold. In the past, groups that have been or are being funded by BSI have presented through the year, and we affirmed that we wish to do that again this year. The group also affirmed that we want to hear more from student services, specifically Matt Kritscher, about the work on the implementation of the SSSA. The group also noted that, given the work being done across campus, we should make a clear effort to connect the projects with the outcomes with institutionalization and recommendations to various groups, for example CEMC and PRBC. The proposed schedule now looks like this: 1 Date Agenda August 27 Collaborating around Student Success September 10 Carolyn Arnold: Institutional Research, Educational Goal Groups/Scorecard September 24 Briefings from Habits of Mind, Online Learning, PRBC Initiatives, CIN, ESL October 8 FLEX DAY: No meeting October 22 Student Success Conference Share (everyone who goes be prepared to share) November 12 Carolyn Arnold: Student Title III/ARCCData November 26 Matt K: SSSP requirement, actions, progress December 10 Briefings from Math (multiple projects) and assessment: how can we support/collaborate SSSP Next topic: collaboration with the SSSA efforts on campus. We asked Matt and all the counselors present to help us understand what the legislation mandates and what is currently underway here on campus. Matt briefly introduced the work groups and what’s ahead, but he specifically stated that he really need a full meeting to talk about this. There are four work groups: policy and procedures, PSCN25, communication, and tech (IT/programming). Matt said that the most important two impacts are increased student accountability and full matriculation. For example, students who do not complete matriculation (even continuing students) will lose their priority registration. Several people asked what this group can do, for example, supporting putting a hold on registration for students (new or continuing) who haven’t completed matriculation. Carolyn and Trish both stated that this group has supported matriculation with various groups on campus, but we don’t seem to be able to get past the college level. Matt shared that with the legislative requirements and with changes in leadership at Las Positas and the district, things are starting to move. The question of collaboration will need additional information, which will come later in the semester and ongoing dialogue. The question is: How to coordinate the work that is being done to support students on campus, and the role of the Basic Skills Committee in the work? 2
