Trish reviewed conferences, including upcoming Student Success conference and the few
remaining spots available.
She then presented a “short” list of the current projects. All of whom have been asked to
summarize either/both previous or future work. She also described where funding has or will be
spent during this year.
Funding to counseling to provide more access to students in July and August.
Orientations for online students (who don’t often understand what online classes entail).
Habits of Mind FIG put out the resource guide you should have gotten in your mailbox
(distributed to all faculty and staff).
ESL provided writing workshop for students in any course (extended to this year).
Learning Connection: direct support to students and piloting alternative delivery modes.
IR Office, funding for additional work.
SSR will undertake another symposium this year with additional social science classes
participating.
CIN will continue its outreach, involving additional courses/instructors this year.
Math has several projects, including faculty member to mentor faculty teaching new prestats

and meetings, etc.

Passion Project, Opportunity and Freedom, and Assessment. All have projects/efforts
underway. Specifically, Passion Project is writing course (in curriculum) and mentoring
faculty. Opportunity and Freedom is research what we do on campus and what is being done
in our community, with the purpose of linking our communities to better serve both students
and the community.
Houses/Pathways continues to research options and provide opportunities for faculty and
staff to listen and participate in defining the possible options we offer students.

Presentation -- Online Engagement FIG Video (get link). In addition to continuing work on
pedagogy and engagement, this spring the group conducted focus groups. Unexpected outcome was that
students, after registering for class, don’t know what do to next. Group feels we should tell them what to
do. There is a gap there. Do student process the information provided in the orientation? How do we
know? How do we find out? NOTE: See article forwarded to college by Trish Shannon, SJ State has
ended their highly publicized MOOCs.
Jeanie” Her daughter is taking an online class. She didn’t know what to do. Maybe we need a Youtube
video that could be sent to enrolled students after they sign up for the class that covers next step.
Student rep: if students leave and come back, they should have to “redo” orientation.
CIN -- Pedro Reynoso and Felicia Tripp (request slide presentation)
Outreach at Arroyo High
Combination of Basic Skills and Transfer courses PLUS PSCN/Library
Student Advisory Board
Western States Conference 2013
Assessment and Reflection (focus group)
Building Collaboration with other learning communities/efforts (Great Debate)
End of the year celebration
We ran out of time, so ESL and HOM will present at a later meeting in late November or early
December. We also didn’t get to ask many follow up questions of Pedro and Felicia.
There were some quick comments: Marcia about the need/use of cooperative space, which is 804 (using
a SARs machine), but that is just temporary. Pedro responding to what might be possible once Bldg.
100 refurbishment is complete. Felicia stating that the more that learning communities collaborate, the
more a shared space makes sense.
