Course Proposal Form
(Send as an email attachment to DECSC chair)
2004-2005
These questions are meant to provide you, our faculty colleagues, a framework for your Distance
Education Curriculum Proposal. These are guidelines, not mandates. Much of this emerged from
an Academic Senate for California Community Colleges white paper, available in our resource
area. We believe careful and thorough consideration of these issues will improve not just your
proposal, but also your entire course design. Please feel free to elaborate where you think most
important. Note: Please click on File, Save As to save this form as a document, so you can work
on it and submit it electronically to the DE Curriculum Support Committee chair.
Each proposal or existing course, if delivered by distance education, shall be separately
reviewed and approved by the curriculum committee prior to being offered. (Ed Code 55378)
Course Title & Number: Introduction To Marketing (Bus 36)
Faculty Name: Jaswinder Bhangal
1.
Need/Justification
Business Discipline is facing the consequences of budget cuts and low enrolments like
several other discipline. Business faculty as a team is researching and finding ways to increase
class enrollments by finding alternate means of reaching our customers. I as a Marketing
instructor feel that by offering Bus 36 in an online format, I am taking my product to my
customer instead of just waiting for customers to come to me.
The way the business has been conducted is changing rapidly. Lot of our students are
full-time employees with families and have a schedule that makes it very difficult for them to
make time for education of any sort. Offering the course online will make it possible for those
students to take the class.
Additionally, the definition of community has changed. With the availability of internet,
the learning communities have emerged in the educational world. I feel that Marketing course
has a need to offered online to reach this learning community and will assist Chabot College in
increasing enrollments and revenue.
Bus 36 is currently offered as a part of the Business, Marketing, Management and
Retailing programs. It fulfills the GE requirements for both Chabot’s AS/AA and CSUH.
Students are taking this course to either get a certificate in Marketing and Retailing programs or
to get a flavor of Marketing to explore an option of this field. This limits the need of the course
in a small market segment that Chabot College serves. By offering it online, we will be able to
serve a much larger segment as we will not only serve the current community but will be
available at a much larger scale.
2.
Course Content Delivery
This course will be offered completely online. Bus 36 meets for 54 hours per
semester. The online class will meet the same number of hours with the following
schedule of time:
E-lectures, Research and Assignments – 27

Exams –6
Online discussion –10
Email communication, Synchronous discussions/Chat sessions –7
Instructor will hold traditional office hours on campus and will be available to meet

Instruction will be completely asynchronous-online. For each chapter there will be
e-lectures, PP, assignments, assessments and discussion board.
Announcement section will be used to remind students of weekly assignments. Each
chapter will be followed by an assessment. These assessments will be graded. Students
not participating in these assessments will be contacted via phone or email. Tests will
consist of Multiple Choice and True/False questions.
Above stated teaching/learning modalities will lead to student centered learning versus a
traditional teacher centered classroom. The course design will encourage students to take
responsibility in their learning, to develop better communication and critical thinking
skills. The online modality will allow the instructor to contact students individually and
more frequently to provide feedback
Assignments & Methods of Evaluation
Student progress will be evaluated as follows:
Each chapter will be followed by a Quiz/Discussion Board to help students assess their
understanding of the material.
Exams will consist of Multiples Choice and True/False questions.
Discussion Board will be used to post questions, carry discussion on each chapter. This
will help students improve their communications skills and provide a freedom to
post/answer questions at any time.
Current articles and Case studies and will be made a part of the curriculum. These articles
and case studies will be followed by questions that students will need to answer and
submit in the written report form.

suitability. Currently, the marketing class is doing a project for the Community
Education department to develop promotional brochure/tools to promote the department
