Requesting 3.86 FTEF to align our ESL curriculum with the LPC curriculum to begin in the fall of 2016. Reasons and then specifics: • Increase in WSCH/FTEF ratio—get spec's • Loose fewer students who don't go on to 1A (IR data) • Consistency across the district • Equity across the district • Possibility for a broader international student program like LPC’s • We can serve more of the community—lower students who might not otherwise make the transition from adult school • Addresses a felt need in our program—too rushed to cover all the curriculum • Note: Int’l students needing ESL are now sent to LPC Specifics: Adopt the first 4 levels whole cloth—same course outlines Pending a new placement instrument, increase the number of students—working with ValJean now Work with English to create an equivalent bridge to English 1A to match English's unique pedagogical philosophy. We're already doing this, having secured equity money. Transition Plan: Students If we have a new assessment instrument in place, we will use it to determine placement. If we don’t: • Those currently in 110A will have the option to move to the second or third Level of the LPC Curriculum. (110A to 131B or 121A). Students will decide in which course they feel most comfortable. This will be an informed choice with input from their current instructor. • Those in 110B will move to LPC’s third or fourth level. (110B to 121A or 121B) • Those in 110C will move LPC’s fourth or fifth level (110C to 121B or English 24) • Those in 110D will move to the new ESL bridge curriculum being designed by our English and ESL programs. Transition Plan: Instructors During the next semesters, we will cover the new curriculum at our level meetings, AND conduct at least one workshop per semester (perhaps on flex day—TBD) to discuss appropriate readings, writing assignments, and grading rubrics for each level of the new curriculum. These discussions will be informed by ESL's work with English to write the bridge curriculum and synchronize our two programs. Transition Plan: Adult Schools We’ll reach out to adult schools in our area, inviting them to our workshops and setting up meetings to familiarize them with our new curriculum and to strategize a “warm and fuzzy hand-‐off.”
