12:05 -- Meeting Called to Order
1. Minutes. Carolyn asked the group to review the 2/10/15 minutes. Michael Thompson moved
to approve, Michelle Iriarte seconded. Motion passed.
2. Shared Governance Proposed Changes – Overall proposal has not yet been completed,
so can’t be discussed yet. When it is, the committee will be asked to evaluate and comment.
One of the proposals is to merge the SSSP Advisory/Equity/Basic Skills Committee. The idea
is to consolidate the number of committees on campus and bring together related efforts.
3. Habits of Mind FIG presentation
Discussion of the presentation. Attach copy of the powerpoint here. As the group
finishes their work, what do we do with their recommendations? ACTION ITEM?
2. Returning to the Shared Governance Proposed Changes discussion:
Carolyn: What are your thoughts about the idea to merge SSSP Advisory/Equity/Basic Skills
Committee?
Mike: More input?
Cindy: They are not all satisfying the same groups. I am concerned that we’ll lose focus on
basic skills.
Christie: In what ways would certain priorities continue to be addressed, but I like the idea of a
cross section.
Michael: I see the Equity-BSC connection, but I can’t see the link to SSSP. Our role has
historically been to working on filling gaps. I don’t know it’s going to continue to do that
now.
Michael: Do we have people on all 3 of those groups? Representatives could share and/or
work.
Rachael: The idea was around Strategic Planning and the groups would decide the how.
Cindy: I think a better way of doing it is having a small group evaluating the proposals and
what funding source should be used.
Carolyn-Cindy exchange on the “combined” proposal process being worked on.
Rachael: What about centralizing proposals and funding?
Cindy: Well, each of the funding sources have different goals.
Mike: What is the SSSP Advisory Committee?
Carolyn: When we shifted from matriculation to SSSP, there were more specific requirements
and structures to improve how students matriculate. In order to bring these efforts online
as required, an advisory group to guide these efforts was formed. This group and its
related funding continues to work.
Trish: It’s basically the implementation of the matriculation-side of the Student Success Task
Force Recommendations when they were legislatively mandated. The reason it might
make sense to bring that group in is because it’s part of the “strong start.”
Rachael: The Work Group did not “require” consolidation.
Carolyn: What would our reasons be for meeting separately?
Hisako: I feel that consolidation might mean that we don’t hear from students as much. We
might lose their participation when our existing pattern means we hear from them a great
deal, for example, the conversation about English 101 A/B and 102 at our last meeting.
Jane: I like the FIG share-out. This is one of the few places where that information is shared.
Christie: In the proposal for an Office of Professional Development, I put a proposal for
centralized coordination of research inquiry (FIGs being research), a new HUB. We hope
for funding and presentations on not just FIGs but also sabbaticals, things like Brown Bag
Lunch presentations, a bigger audience.
Carolyn at 12:55. We have to clear the room, there’s an incoming class!
Discusson to be continued at next meeting.
