african-american read-in The UNI African-American Read-In is a special community outreach project of the Multicultural Teaching Alliance (MTA) student organization in collaboration with UNI’s College of Education, Department of Curriculum and Instruction, and Rod Library. UNI’s Read-In is a part of the larger, 24th Annual National African-American Read-In which is sponsored by the Black Caucus of the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) and endorsed by the International Reading Association. The program’s goal is to make the celebration of African-American literacy a traditional part of Black History Month activities. More than one million readers from all ethnic groups participate in the National African-American Read-In each year. Established by the Pretty Brown Girl Foundation, International Pretty Brown Girl Day is a day to empower, inspire and encourage girls Sheri Crawley, of color to love the skin founder of the they’re in. The mission of the Pretty Brown Girl Foundation and organization is to encourage CEO of Pretty Brown girls to celebrate the beautiful Girl, LLC shades of brown all over the world, while inspiring positive self-esteem and confidence. On this day, the Pretty Brown Girl organization will formally join with moms, volunteers, organizations, churches and schools to launch Pretty Brown Girl Clubs all across the globe. Girls can join a club in their community to bond with each through activities and events while learning invaluable lessons about their self worth. www.prettybrowngirl.com 7th Annual UNI African-American Read-In Thursday, February 21, 2013 Maucker Union, University of Northern Iowa 9:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. This year first grade students will enjoy a variety of activities and special guests throughout the day, including: 7th Annual UNI African-American Read-In Thursday, February 21, 2013 Maucker Union, University of Northern Iowa 9:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. Members of UNI’s Multicultural Teaching Alliance, students from education classes and student organizations, and faculty and staff members representing many divisions across campus volunteer their time to support UNI’s African American Read-In every year. Total volunteers for last year’s event included about 60 UNI faculty and staff and approximately 240 UNI students, 500 first graders and students of NU High School and Price Lab, totaling over 1,000 participants Attendees this year will include first grade students from Waterloo Schools, as well as other Cedar Valley schools and surrounding areas. We welcome students and teachers who are first-time attendees this year! •Shane Evans, author and illustrator, will share stories about how he began, as well as some of his most recent award-winning stories and drawings •Nothando Zulu, storyteller and president and director of the Black Storytellers Alliance, will share her folktale and storytelling talents •Dr. Dwight Watson, dean, College of Education •Phyllis Gray, folklore, folktale storyteller •Kimberli Boyd, founder, Dancing Between the Lines, will lead dance and literacy experiences •Poetry, dance, singing, creative dramatics and more provided by Denise Tallakson’s Expressive Arts students and other creative experiences from Lynn Ensworth’s classes with UNI faculty and student participation •Celebrity readers will include UNI faculty, staff, administrators and community members. •Art activity planned and implemented by UNI’s Multicultural Teaching Alliance •TC and TK will make an appearance! In addition, special guest Sheri Crawley, founder and CEO of Pretty Brown Girls, will be at UNI to help celebrate the AfricanAmerican Read-In and lead activities. She’ll also kick off the International Pretty Brown Girl Day Celebration with kindergarten through eighth grade students in UNI’s Shining Stars Girls Project! Individualized reading is a coordinated activity to celebrate reading books by African American authors and/or illustrators. The main focus of the read-in is to emphasize literacy and reading experiences for students. UNI students, staff, faculty and volunteers will read aloud one-on-one or in small groups with first grade students.
