HORSESHOE
AMERICORPS
& OTHER
VOLUNTEER
POSITIONS
To be blunt—summer AmeriCorps volunteers are here for the
campers, not self. If you cannot put self aside and do this for the
campers, don’t apply.
A foundation of values based on faith is the foundation of our work
for the greater good. This is not a summer job for money, this is a
calling to purpose larger than self.

Our Culture
Our program effectively helps persons better recognize

The setting is rustic—cabins deep in the mountains of the
Monongahela National Forest. All Staff and Volunteers are
to conduct themselves in a professional manner that is in
keeping with our mission and culture. Some of our
practices and behavior as Staff and Volunteers are…

Be professional in appearance, image, language,

program area, or anywhere. The artificial and virtual
are out. If you cannot live without music in your ear
during the day or to sleep at night , don’t apply for a
position.
Helping youth develop leadership, character,
and citizenship skills for a life-long commitment
to service is our Mission.
Children’s Adventure Camps promote selfdiscovery, responsibility and skill building.
Youth Opportunity Camps inspire low
income 7-12 year olds to turn their lives to
achievement in life, school, and community.
Changing Lives in Special Places
Both Horseshoe Leadership Center in West Virginia and our Cave Lake Center for Community Leadership in Ohio
seek to build responsible citizenship—the quality of an individual’s response to membership in a community.
“The hardest job of my life!” This is doing, not talking—not taking tests or writing papers—not acting...this is everything
that happens 24 hours a day. Successful staff and volunteers are those who want to do this, who share the values, who
change the focus beyond one’s self to the greater good, and who want to make a difference. This is not a job, it is a calling!
Campers “catch” our Values by what they see us do... not by what we say! In other words, it is the walk, not the talk
as all we do is guided by seven core values we believe in and seek to teach—Respect, Responsibility, Caring, Honesty,
Fairness, Trustworthiness, and Citizenship.
We demonstrate these values 24 hours of every day.
Believe in the Purpose...make all that we do part
of the big picture and always be able to explain
why...doing this every day is part of our Program.
Physical labor...getting hands dirty, cleaning and
maintaining buildings and grounds, helping in the
kitchen with meals and dishes, keeping camp
clean and a safe environment…doing this every
day is part of our Program.
Mental energy...thinking, making appropriate
decisions, designing experiences that lead
campers and communities to success...doing this
every day is part of our Program.
YLA Leadership Summits at Horseshoe are six
days of discovery, learning, great fun, friends, and
training for an effective YLA program. Youth in
Government and Model United Nations Officers
prepare everyone to involve their local groups.
Responsibility and Duty...doing every job right the
first time, seeing what needs done and doing it without
being asked, doing it again when it needs to be done,
and making it work for everyone...doing this every day
is part of our Program.
Conferences and Retreats for schools,
youth groups, faith based organizations, higher education and others are a year-round feature of Horseshoe and Family Camping is
also available at our nearby
Horseshoe Recreation Area.
Teamwork...camp is a team activity. Members must
have the right skills, attitudes, and personality that are
group oriented and enable each member to live and
work as part of a team with a common purpose ...doing
this every day is part of our Program.
Residential...enjoy life and work in the mountains
away from the material world without time for
self...doing this everyday is part of our Program.
Teen Leadership Retreats strengthen student
organizations and community leadership. The
Entrepreneurship Summit builds an entrepreneurial
culture to develop a new generation of leaders as
they renew local economies and civic life.
Cave Lake Center for Community
Leadership, our 750 acre Ohio property,
attracts 10,000 adults and children for
tent/trailer family camping.
