What is Bioengineering?
• Applying engineering techniques/analysis and
technology to biological and medical problems.
– Some areas (biomedical engineering) are focused
on medical applications and using technology for
solutions to healthcare problems (traditional).
– Others are focused on using engineering principles
and ideas to understand the way biological systems
are constructed.
• Bioengineering is very interdisciplinary encompassing
various fields.

Medical Imaging
• MRI, PET, CAT, etc …

Biomechanics
• How stiff does the hip replacement need to be?
• What kind of loads will it experience?
Ovijit Chaudhuri, PhD candidate Department of Bioengineering, University of California Berkeley 5
Biomaterials
• Mechanical properties?
• Materials that are easy to
mold?
• What kind of materials are
biocompatible?
• Wear, tear, corrosion.
• Immune Response?
