Qijun (Daniel) Hu is a junior student at the University of California Berkeley majoring in
Bioengineering. Three years ago, Daniel came to the United States from China. He
struggled through language barrier and the new environment. Daniel has to work parttime while studying since his first semester. While achieving excellent academic result,
he proved his leadership skill as a mentor, a teaching assistant, and a workshop leader in
Chabot College. With Daniel’s academic achievement and leadership skill, he gained
numerous scholarships and mathematics awards.
Daniel has a passion for serving the community. He worked in the Flood Control Design
team to design flood channels in Alameda County Public Works Agency (ACPWA). He
helped design the improvement of Alameda Creek and Mission Creek to minimize
flooding possibility.
Daniel got his first internship in the Dueber Lab under Synthetic Biology Engineering
Research Center (SynBERC). He participated in research on synthetic scaffold for
increasing the yield of metabolic pathways. Daniel found his interest in biotechnology,
and he realized the benefit of biofuel and drugs to the society and environment. Daniel
currently research on optimization and chromosomal integration of the mevalonate
pathway in E. coli for biofuels and drugs production in the Joint BioEnergy Institute
(JBEI) while taking classes in Berkeley. Following graduation from UC Berkeley, Daniel
plans to work for a company or continue studying in the biotechnology field.
