1.
Need/Justification
Nursing processes in the care of clients with infectious diseases is a required course for Chabot
college nursing program. It is transferable to the CSU systems. The course is also taken by all
nursing students and students at Chabot campus and extended valley campus. This course is also
offered For CE (continuing education) for LVN and nurses who are interested in learning about
infectious diseases and wish to enhance their knowledge base.
The hybrid online format will be more convenient for working students. The one unit course is
traditionally offered one day a week for one hour. The hybrid format will facilitate flexibility in
student’s schedule as well as classroom assignment on campus. The course will be offered
online except for one hours of instruction on the first day of class as well as one hour of class
monthly. Students will take exams on blackboard during their monthly class visit as well as online timed quizzes. Tests and Final exam will be administered on blackboard.
2.
Course Content Delivery
The course will be offered on the basis of 25% face-to-face and 75% online. The class will meet
monthly face-to-face for one hours. I will post my PowerPoint presentation in RTF format. The
online aspect will include weekly discussion of topical issues in the field of infectious diseases.
The approximate hours of online work and on campus work will be structured as described
below:
a. The lecture notes will be available online with elaborate detail and external links. It is
expected that each student will spend at least forty minutes (40) a week reviewing the
lecture notes and assigned materials from the book for a total of at least 640 minutes (ten
hours and forty minutes) hours over the semester.
b. Students would spend approximately 25 minutes twice a month completing discussion
board assignments for a total of at least 200 minutes or (3 hours and 20 minutes) over
the semester.
c. On campus Exams and lectures. There will be quizzes as well as a Final exam. The
exams will be given on campus using blackboard. Students will have the opportunity to review
the test followed by lecture discussion for a total of four (4) hours over the semester.

Nature and Frequency of Student-Student Interactions
Students will interact weekly on the Discussion Board. They will be given questions to respond
to and share their research on a variety of issues.
5.
Assignments & Methods of Evaluation
Students will be evaluated as follows




Two in-class exams for a total of 60%.
A final in-class exam for a total of 40points. .
eight problems to be submitted to the Discussion Board at the rate of two a month for a total
of 40 Points=
Two on-line exams for a total of 60%.

Technology
The online components of this course will be managed through Blackboard, which can be
accessed from any computer with internet access. An overview of Blackboard will be provided
to the students during the first class session. Students must have e mail accounts to participate in
the course. This is available for free from some providers. Students who have difficulty can
contact the Help Desk at the Chabot College Library and can contact the instructor by e mail or
phone or in person at the face-to-face class meeting.
7.
Accommodations for Students with Disabilities
Students will be on campus every month. Blackboard meets the basic requirements of
accessibility for students with disabilities. Every effort will be made to accommodate students
with special needs.
8.
Input from Colleagues and Administrators
Fall 2006: I took classes on Blackboard training blackboard instruction with Lynn Sandoval and
have been c consistently utilizing blackboard for posting my Power-point presentations and
lecture notes in 3 Nursing courses and Psych12-Life span Psychology. I have used Respondus
and at present administer tests on blackboard.
January 29, 2009: I had a one to one instruction on “Discussion Board” with Lisa Ulibarri.

January 29, 2009: I have met with nursing program Director Dr. Nancy Cowan and she is very
supportive and enthusiastic about offering the course in hybrid format.
