INDEPENDENT STUDY—TUTORING
Catalog Description:
29 – Independent Study—Tutoring
May be repeated 3 times
.5-2 units
A practical experience to help other students learn and succeed in school-related activities.
Provides opportunities to gain experience in the field of education in preparation for making
career choices. For 1 unit, 1 hour lecture, 2 hours tutoring; for 2 units, 1 hour lecture, 4 hours
tutoring.
[Typical contact hours: lecture 17.5, laboratory 35 - 70]
Prerequisite Skills:
None
Expected Outcomes for Students:
Upon successful completion of the course, the student will:
1. demonstrate ability to assess tutee’s needs, design and apply tutoring plans, and work
cooperatively with instructional faculty;
2. have been assigned to tutor other students individually and/or in groups at the college
Tutorials Center, learning laboratories, instructional divisions, or supervised off-campus
sites, i.e., elementary or secondary schools;
3. have been trained by faculty in tutoring techniques relevant to their tutoring experiences,
including problem-solving and subject-specific applications;
4. have gained first-hand experiences upon which to base career choices.
Course Content
The Independent Study Project contracted for the individual student incorporates tutor
training content relevant to and combined with assigned hours of applied tutoring. Examples:
interpersonal communication skills, facilitating learning groups, needs assessment
techniques, problem-solving applications, study skills, and subject-specific tutoring
techniques.
Methods of Presentation:
Lecture, individual and group discussion of tutoring applications, media presentations, and
faculty resource presentations.

Methods of Evaluating Student Progress:
Credit/non-credit grade issued, based on completion of individualized independent study
assignment agreed upon by student and faculty tutor supervisor.
