SPORT IN CONTEMPORARY SOCIETY
Course Description:
8 - Sport in Contemporary Society
History of sport; the political, social and economic impact of sport on public opinion. An
investigation into the phenomenon of sport including cultural stratification, race, gender,
education, economics, politics and the mass media. 3 hours.

Prerequisite Skills:
None
Expected Outcomes for Students:
Upon completion of the course the student will be able to:
1. describe the nature and function of sport;
2. describe the relationship between sport and society;
3. demonstrate understanding of the history of racism in sport;
4. explain the progress of women in sport;
5. interpret the influences of politics on sport.
