Course Outline for Physical Education 2
FITNESS/SELF-DEFENSE
Catalog Description:
PHED 2FS – Fitness/Self-Defense
1 unit
This course is designed to provide basic information to students wishing to increase their awareness of and
fitness for self-defense. The materials for this course are predicated upon the use of sound physiological
principles. The class will meet 3 hours per week.
Prerequisite Skills:
None
Expected Outcomes for the Students:
This course is designed to prepare students physically to handle the basic elements of self-defense and to
acquaint students with proper exercises for specific fitness awareness in self-defensive measures. The
students will also improve their self-confidence and mental discipline through participation in specific
self-defensive exercises. They will also develop specific strength, endurance, and coordination techniques
specific to a course.
Course Content:
1. Exercises which will provide for proper execution of difficult self-defensive movements.
a.
Proper strength exercises for total body development.
b.
Specific exercises for the development of muscular endurance.
c.
Specific exercises for cardiovascular development.
d.
Exercises designed to increase flexibility and reflex action.
e.
Safety procedures.
2. Adaptive techniques for various self-defensive procedures:
a.
Choke holds.
b.
Street techniques.
c.
Weapons.
d.
Wrestling.
3. Self-awarness and confidence development through programmed exercises.
Methods of Presentation:
Course materials will be presented through the use of lecture demonstration, visual aids, movies and
supplemental readings. Student participation is essential for the course.
Assignments and Methods of Evaluating Student Progress:
1. Participation in class activities.
2. Proper development and execution of all phases of the class.
3. Attendance.
