Chabot College December, 1979 Course Outline for Physical Education 1 TAE-KWON-DO Catalog Description: PHED 1TKD – Tae-Kwon-Do 0.5 unit Greater flexibility does, however, aid more rapid progression in the tae-kwon-do exercises and katas. This course falls into the category of Body Mechanics, one of the four activity areas described in the Chabot College Catalog. The class will meet 2 hours per week. Prerequisite Skills: None Expected Outcomes for the Students: This course is designed to present the basics of tae-kwon-do as a method of self-defense, and to aid the development of self-confidence. The student should develop general physical conditioning and the body control required in tae-kwon-do movements. The student should be able to perform the tae-kwon-do techniques, and should demonstrate these acquired skills in two katas upon completion of the unit. Course Content: 1. Introduction to the Philosophy to Tae-kwon-do 2. Basic Movements a. Stances b. body positioning for defense and/or attacks c. blocking techniques d. hip turning for defense and/or attack e. muscular coordination of the arm development f. muscular coordination of the leg development g. complete balance control for the various positions of tae-kwon-do 3. Punching techniques 4. Striking techniques 5. Kicking techniques 6. Defense techniques a. upper-body defense b. mid-body defense c. lower-body defense 7. Exposure to the major purpose and aesthetic values of kata Methods of Presentation: Instruction will be given in the group as a whole, as well as on an individual basis. The material for the course will be presented through combination of Instructor demonstrations and lecture. Verbal description and explanation of drills will be a main part of instruction. Participation in class activities 2. Proper execution of tae-kwon-do exercises and katas 3. Regular class attendance with proper attire 4. Final written exam on the basic philosophy and terms of tae-kwon-do *This information will be made available in the Class Information Sheet to be distributed during the first two class meetings.
