Chabot College June, 1989 Course Outline for Physical Education 1 BASKETBALL Catalog Description: PHED 1BK - Basketball 0.5 unit This course is designed to provide the beginning student with an opportunity to acquire the basic skills and understanding of basketball. Through active participation in the course, the student should be able to maintain an adequate level of physical fitness and awareness of safety procedures, care of equipment and the enjoyment of participation in a team activity. The class will meet 2 hours per week. Prerequisite Skills: None Expected Outcomes for the Students: Upon completion of the course the student will be able to: 1. To learn the basic drills & techniques for speed and power training; 2. To increase overall physical fitness, especially strength and power, through the application of the advanced methods of power lifting; 3. To develop a capability of an adequate performance in the power lifts (Olympic Bar Bench Press, Olympic Bar Back Squat, Olympic Bar Dead Lift). Course Content: 1. Orientation a. Present nature of game and opportunities for play outside of class. b. Care and use of equipment. c. Court conduct and conditioning 2. Basic Skills for Presentation a. Passing i. Chest pass ii. Bounce pass iii. One-hand underhand pass iv. Two-hand overhand pass v. Hook pass b. Shooting i. One hand overhand shot ii. Hook shot iii. Lay up shot iv. Free throw shooting c. Instruction will be given in large groups, small groups, and on an individual basis. Student practice is emphasized. Assignments and Methods of Evaluating Student Progress: Each student will be required to demonstrate specific skills relative to the subject, and to maintain an adequate attendance record for the duration of the course.
