500 - Supplemental Instruction: Nursing
0 units
Supplemental clinical practice in patient assessment, math calculation, practice of nursing skills.
Corequisite: Nursing 55, 59, 60A, 60B, 60C, 73, or Physiology 2L or equivalent. 0-10 hours laboratory.
Prerequisite Skills:
None
Expected Outcomes for Students:
Upon completion of the course, the student should be able to:
1.
Successfully demonstrate the following skills as related to primary course:
a. handwashing;
b. assessment of vital signs;
c. measuring height and weight;
d. positioning clients;
e
making occupied and unoccupied beds;
f.
standard precautions;
g. transferring clients and ambulating clients;
h. principles of aseptic technique;
i.
mechanical lifts;
j.
feeding clients;
k. oral care;
l.
placement on bedpan;
m. medication calculations;
n. enteral feedings;
o. medication administration;
p. fingerstick blood sugar;
q. preparation of insulin;
r.
giving subcutaneous and intramuscular injections;
s. development of a nursing care plan;

principles of body mechanics;
u. monitoring and calculating intravenous drip rate;
v. proper charting and reporting skills;
w. maintenance of client confidentiality;
x. application of basic organizational skills;
y. application of principles of professionalism;
z. basic pre/post operative care;

bb. sterile dressing change/wound irrigation;
cc. surgical asepsis: scrubbing, gowning, gloving;
dd. insertion and care of nasogastric tube;
ee. administration of intravenous fluids and medications;
ff. administration of intravenous medications by central and implanted venous access

gg. initiation of intravenous catheter
hh. tracheostomy care/suctioning;
