Chabot College Fall 2005 Course Outline for Nursing 54 CLINICAL TOPICS Catalog Description 54 - Clinical Topics 0.5 units Study of selected clinical topics and associated nursing process related to nursing practice. Prerequisite: Completion of Nursing 59 or Nursing 60A (or the equivalent) with a “C” or better, or possession of a valid California LVN or RN license. 1 hour. Total weeks: 9. [Typical contact hours: 9] Prerequisite Skills Before entering the course, the student should be able to: 1. Demonstrate satisfactory performance in the following nursing skills in the skills laboratory: a. hygienic care (bed bath, bed making, oral care); b. assessment of vital signs; c. nutritional care, including providing oral and enteral feedings; d. collection of specimens and analysis of findings; e. handwashing; f. principles of body mechanics; g. positioning/lifting/transferring the client to or from bed/chair; h. observing and documenting intake and output; i. assessment of thorax, skin, abdomen, oral cavity, and peripheral vascular system, including normal physiological changes across the life span; j. administration of oxygen; k. administration of medications by oral, intramuscular, subcutaneous, topical and enteral routes; l. application of ace wraps; m. inspection of intravenous sites, including calculation of IV drip rates; n. basic principles of surgical asepsis; o. safe application of restraints; p. identify and describe the scientific principles that form the basis for assessments and nursing interventions which assist the client’s adaptation in the delivery of nursing care. Expected Outcomes for Students: Upon completion of the course, the student should be able to: a. demonstrate mastery of the scientific principles and psychomotor skills included in the selected topics; b. satisfactorily articulate those clinical behaviors indicating a change in the continuum of wellness to illness in the patient; c. identify assessments needed in the delivery of nursing care which indicate the differences in simple and complex decision-making.
