LIBRARY SKILLS
Catalog Description:
1 – Library Skills
1 unit
Introduction to techniques of library research, including development of a search strategy, location and
evaluation of material in a variety of sources and formats including the Internet, and preparation of a
Works Cited list. Self-paced or classroom-based. 1 hour.

Expected Outcomes for Students:
Upon completion of this course the student should be able to:

Introducing the Chabot Library

Searching Chabot/Las Positas and other online catalogs
Searching periodical databases
Using the Internet for research
Analyzing and evaluating sources
Compiling a Works Cited List based upon research into an approved topic
Methods of Presentation (classroom-based):

a. Read the chapter on periodical databases and use EBSCOhost to find two articles on your
topic. Be sure to limit your search to journals. Print out the citation for each article and, on
each printout, record how and why you made this choice.
b. Locate the various service areas on the map of the Library and choose one area to introduce
yourself to the staff member there. Conduct a five-minute interview to determine the area’s
services and prepare a five-minute presentation about the area.
c.
Using the evaluation matrix for the Web, evaluate the RAWA website based upon the
following criteria: accuracy; authority; objectivity; currency; and coverage.
