Prerequisite: Health 51A (completed with a grade of "C" or higher). 4 hours. [Typical contact hours: 70] Prerequisite Skills Before entering the course, the student should be able to: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. describe the components of medical terms; demonstrate the ability to build medical terms using word parts; demonstrate the ability to define a medical term, by dividing it into its elements; spell and pronounce medical terms; apply medical terms and abbreviations appropriately; identify word roots, suffixes, prefixes, anatomical, diagnostic, medical, surgical, and additional terms as they relate to each body system; describe elements of selected processes, such as HIV/AIDS. Expected Outcomes for Students: Upon completion of the course, the student should be able to: 1. describe basic structure and function of the human body in terms of cells, tissues, organs and systems; 2. identify the various mechanisms of disease; 3. describe the role of nutrition and metabolism in health and disease; 4. list the importance of homeostasis in terms of acid base balances, and fluid and electrolyte balance; 5. describe the process of growth and development; 6. describe genetics and genetic diseases; 7. build and apply medical terms and abbreviations used in the medical field; 8. identify the pathogenesis, clinical manifestations and therapeutic modalities as they relate to diseases of each body system; 9. build and apply concepts from Health 51A for selected foci for example HIV/AIDS and aging.
