EDITING FOR THE ADVANCED ESL WRITER
Catalog Description:
114 - Editing for the Advanced ESL Writer 2 units
Use of standard written English to develop personal strategies for self-editing. Designed to ease the transition between explicit ESL instruction and the fluency demands of mainstream English curriculum.
Prerequisite: A grade of pass in ESL 110D or eligibility for English 101A demonstrated through the
English Placement Process. 2 hours.

Prerequisite Skills:
Before entering the course the student should be able to:
1. use essay form as an organizing convention;
2. support main ideas with concrete details and specific examples;
3. demonstrate command of standard written English grammar by detecting and correcting nonstandard usage;
4. demonstrate literal and analytical understanding of assigned texts.
Expected Outcomes for Students:
Upon completion of the course students should be able to:
1. detect errors in their own writing;
2. correct these errors to conform to the conventions of written English.

1. Sentence-level grammar study
2. Writing assignments
3. Revision strategies, including editing and proofreading
Methods of Presentation:
1. Lectures
2. Individual and group editing tasks
3. Individual student-teacher conferences
Assignments and Methods of Evaluating Student Progress:
1. Typical Assignments a. In a given paragraph, mark subjects, verbs and prepositional phrases; then find errors in verb tense and form. b. Write a paragraph on a given topic. Using the marking system we have studied, find and correct errors in verbs and sentence structure.
2. Methods of Evaluating Student Progress a. Quizzes b. Writing assignments c. Final assessment of student's portfolio

Writing Clearly: An Editing Guide, Second Edition, Lane and Lange, Heinle and Heinle, 1999.*
*This is by far the best text in the area of editing.
