Chabot College January, 1994 Replaced Fall 2010 Course Outline for English 102 READING, REASONING, AND WRITING - ACCELERATED COURSE Catalog Description: 102 - Reading, Reasoning, and Writing - Accelerated Course 4 units Emphasis in the development of thinking, reading, organizing, and writing skills, particularly those required for successful execution of college-level papers in all subject areas. Designed for those requiring minimal preparation for entering English 1A. Strongly recommended: Appropriate skill level demonstrated through the English placement process. 3 hours lecture, 2 hours individualized instruction. [Typical contact hours: lecture 52.5, individualized instruction 35] Expected Outcomes for Students: Upon completion of this course, students should: 1. comprehend the purpose of readings and respond critically to the content; 2. formulate a controlling idea to focus their writing and to support each point with adequate and varied evidence; 3. use a variety of prereading and prewriting strategies to formulate reading and writing goals and responses; 4. explain and support abstract concepts found in readings; 5. form inferences from specific data and explain them with specific data; 6. tailor a writing to address a specific audience; 7. detect and correct major mechanical and grammatical errors.
