Chabot College January, 1994 Replaced Fall 2010 Course Outline for English 101B READING REASONING, AND WRITING II Catalog Description: 101B - Reading, Reasoning and Writing II 4 units Continues preparation in English for success in college. Integrates reading, critical thinking, and writing assignments, using materials that present a variety of perspectives from across the curriculum. Prerequisite: Successful completion of English 101A. 3 hours, 2 hours individualized instruction. [Typical contact hours: lecture 52.5, individualized instruction 35] Expected Outcomes for Students: Upon completion of this course, the student should: 1. assess the reading task in advance according to the purpose for reading and the difficulty of the materials to be read; 2. establish outcomes for the reading material prior to reading it by forming appropriate questions; 3. pause at intervals to recite, reflect and develop additional questions or outcomes for the reading 4. develop methods and strategies which will enable a more critical evaluation of the text; 5. respond critically to reading by means of class discussions and through writing; 6. support written and spoken responses to a reading by citing appropriate and adequate textual evidence (and other rationale when appropriate); 7. organize coherent essays around a central idea; 8. apply structural elements in writing that are appropriate to the audience and purpose; 9. proofread her/his own prose. Elements of textual analysis: A. evaluating the reading sources B. analyzing rhetorical devices C. drawing inferences and conclusions D. citing textual evidence E. applying the reading outcome to other contexts 4. Both oral and written responses to one book-length work 5. Both graded and ungraded written responses to reading, ranging from, for instance, reading logs to rough drafts to essays which integrate the reading and writing 6. Collaborative work, which may include, but is not limited to, peer editing 7.
