CLINICAL EXPERIENCE SEMINAR II
Catalog Description:
82B – Clinical Experience Seminar II
2 units
Discussion and analysis of complex case-based clinical situations. Ethical, legal decision making,
occupational standards and incident reporting in the clinical setting. Review of materials pertaining
to the National Dental Hygiene Board and the Clinical State Dental Hygiene Board exams.
Corequisite: Dental Hygiene 58A and 80B. 2 hours.

Expected Outcomes for Students:
Upon completion of the course the student should be able to:
1.
apply advanced ethical reasoning to dental hygiene practice;
2.
apply the methods to maintain professional accountability in the clinical setting;
3.
identify common ethical dilemmas in dental hygiene practice;
4.
identify ethical and legal duties that an oral health care provider has to a client;
5.
identify the oral health needs of the individual and develop appropriate and individualized
self-care regimens with respect to the goals, values, beliefs, and preferences of the
patient/client;
6.
determine priorities and establish oral health goals with the patient/client and/or guardian as
an active participant;
7.
establish a planned sequence of educational and clinical services based on the dental
hygiene diagnosis, which includes etiology, prognosis, and treatment alternatives;
8.
evaluate the effectiveness of planned clinical and educational services in the clinical setting;
9.
determine the appropriate maintenance schedule for the clinical client;
10.
develop and maintain a health maintenance program for the clinical client;
11.
explain what HIPAA is and its role in dentistry;
12.
describe who is protected by HIPAA;
13.
list the protocols for abiding by the policies set forth by HIPAA;
14.
list the penalties for violation of HIPAA;
15.
describe the criteria necessary in selection of a client for the California State Board clinical
examination;
16.
review materials from previous courses in the dental hygiene course sequence and apply that
information to case studies.
