COMMUNITY DENTAL HEALTH II
Catalog Description:
56B - Community Dental Health II
1 unit
Continuation of Dental Hygiene 56A. Individual and community oral health problems, with
emphasis on the dental hygienist as a resource person. Prerequisite: Dental Hygiene 56A (completed
with a grade of C or higher). 1 hour.
[Typical contact hours: 17.5]
Prerequisite Skills:
Upon completion of the course the student should be able to:
1.
define health, public health, community health and barriers to care;
2.
differentiate community dental health care from private practice dental care;
3.
outline a basic time-line of dental public health and the ten greatest public health
achievements;
4.
identify the public health agencies and their purpose at the federal level;
5.
describe the impact of the Surgeon’s General Report on Oral Health in America;
6.
define the purpose of Healthy People 2010 and list the 17 objectives for improving the
oral health of Americans;
7.
outline the steps and apply the methodologies used in planning a community oral health
care program: assessment, diagnosis, planning, funding, implementation, and evaluation;
8.
define the major oral health problems and the extent to which they affect the population;
9.
define epidemiology and the types of epidemiological research;
10. describe the different indices used to measure dental disease and under what conditions they are
used;
11. analyze data collected from assessments from a target group and utilize this data to write a
working plan for a community oral health project;
12. develop goals and measurable objectives for a community oral health project.
Expected Outcomes for Students:
Upon completion of the course the student should be able to:
1. apply health promotion theories for educating the community;
2. design a lesson plan for the community oral health project using principles of learning and
teaching;
3. implement a community oral health care and oral health promotion project;
4. define the major oral health problems and the extent to which they affect the population;
5. list the various preventive measures that can be used in the community to reduce and/or
control major oral health problems;
6. articulate the arguments for and against community water fluoridation;
7. identify the public agencies at the federal, state and local levels who distribute funds for
dental care and the categories of recipients:
8. describe the process of applied research in relation to your community oral health project;
9. differentiate between descriptive and inferential statistics and delineate under what
conditions these tests would be used;
10. utilize statistical analysis for your community oral health project;

11. explain the role of the RDH activities related to the prevention and control of dental diseases
and the promotion of health;
12. design a community dental health education table clinic. Poster board presentation or
