Chabot College Fall 2002 Course Outline for Speech 2B ORAL INTERPRETATION OF LITERATURE II Catalog Description: 2B - Oral Interpretation of Literature II 3 units Further development of skills and knowledge of individual oral interpretation from more difficult and specialized literary sources. Explores other forms of performance such as duet reading and chamber theatre. Development of dialect and further vocal characterization. Prerequisite: Speech 2A. 3 hours. [Typical contact hours: 52.5] Prerequisite Skills: Before entering the course the student should be able to: 1. interpret quality literature aloud; 2. write scholarly criticisms of the literature which the student chooses to present orally; 3. demonstrate sensitivity for language, empathy for its power and beauty, and an understanding of its range and flexibility; 4. develop and use the voice for an intelligent and pleasurable experience for the speaker and for the audience. Typical Assignments a. Using at least three poems, create a thematic poetry program for performance. Performance should not exceed 10 minutes. b. Write a brief essay in which you discuss persona and theme progression of your poetry performance. c. Select literature for performance from any genre for which a dialect is needed. The performance should not exceed 7 minutes. d. For your final performance recital, choose a region of the United States or a foreign country and research typical literature of the area. Select literature representing two genres for performance. Make sure your performance includes appropriate accent and/or regionalisms. Lecture/recital not to exceed 15 minutes. 2.
