Chabot College/Las Positas College February 1994 Removed Fall 2006 Course Outline for Automotive Technology 55 AUTOMOTIVE SERVICE Catalog Description: 55 - Automotive Service (May be repeated three times) 3 units Role of the automotive service technician in the automotive industry with an emphasis on preventative maintenance, lubrication, and inspection. Introduction to hazardous waste handling. Development and theory of computer access to service manuals. 1.5 hours lecture, 5 hours laboratory. Expected Outcomes for Students: Upon completion of the course the student should be able to: 1. recognize the importance of preventative maintenance to the automobile and its components; 2. understand the theory and operation of a wide variety of automotive components and the importance of inspection, servicing, and lubrications; 3. understand safety procedures and the ramifications of handling hazardous waste materials; 4. identify the concepts of computer-stored service information, and have the ability to access this information; 5. demonstrate the ability to update older information systems to meet the needs of the rapidly changing automobile industry. Course Content: 1. Shop practice 2. Inspection procedures 3. Lubricants 4. Lubrication systems 5. Automotive systems 6. Accident prevention and safety standards 7. Hazardous material handling 8. Legal requirements; Bureau of Automotive Repair "Write it Right" 9. Pre-service requirements 10. Basic service manual usage 11. Computer theory 12. Application of the computer as used by the automotive technician. Methods of Presentation: Lecture and demonstration; laboratory; guest speakers, where applicable; possible field trips. Methods of Evaluating Student Progress: Class participation; performance of laboratory projects; homework assignments; quizzes; midterm and final examination.
