Chabot College Fall 2010 Course Outline for Art 16D CERAMICS- INTERMEDIATE Catalog Description: 16D – Ceramics-Intermediate (May be repeated 3 times) 3 units Intermediate technical skills of wheel-thrown and hand-constructed clay forms. Glaze exploration and experimentation. Exploration in the history of contemporary ceramic art and masters. Prerequisite: Art 16C (completed with a grade of “C” or higher.) 2 hours lecture, 4 hours studio. [Typical contact hours: lecture 35, studio 70] Prerequisite Skills: 1. show mastery of intermediate technical skills in the methods of wheel-thrown forms; learn the technique of soft slab construction; 2. demonstrate an awareness of the procedure and process for loading glaze and bisque kilns; 3. develop an appreciation, understanding and practical application of the creative development of the ceramic forms. Expected Outcomes for Students: Upon completion of the course, students should be able to: 1. 1.refine their technical skills in hand-constructed and wheel-thrown forms; 2. focus on specific projects in ceramics, gain an appreciation, understanding the practical application of the creative development of a selected ceramic form; 3. demonstrate and understand decoration techniques appropriate for specific forms for the level of study; 4. illustrate an understanding of contemporary approaches to ceramics. Course Content (lecture): 1. Glaze mixing and exploration of glaze application and ceramic history 2. Introduction to contemporary ceramic artists Course Content (studio): 1. Production of wheel-thrown and hand-constructed forms appropriate for intermediate technical skills 2. Technical skills of wheel-thrown and hand-constructed clay forms with emphasis on creative expression of form 3. Refined development of surface enrichment techniques Methods of Presentation: 1. Formal lectures and lecture demonstration 2. Individual instruction and critiques at each class session 3. Assigned reading of selected reference material 4. Create lidded wheel thrown container form with different types of shapes based on demonstration b. Mix one large studio batch of glaze with instructor c. Create a hard slab constructed form 8"-10" in height or length based on demonstration 2. Methods of Evaluating Student Progress a. Completion of assigned work b.
