Chabot College Fall 2011 Course Outline for Art 12D OIL / ACRYLIC PAINTING – ADVANCED II Catalog Description: 12D – Oil / Acrylic Painting – Advanced II 3 units Continued development of advanced projects in oil or acrylic painting with emphasis on individual creative work and development of personal ideas and style. Prerequisite: Art 12C (completed with a grade of C or higher). 2 hours lecture, 4 hours studio. [Typical contact hours: lecture 35, studio 70] Prerequisite Skills: Before entering the course the student should be able to: 1. demonstrate practical usage of tools and techniques of painting whether working with oils or acrylics; 2. name and begin to replicate specific perspectival strategies to alter a two-dimensional picture plane into an illusionistic three-dimensional space; 3. recognize and discuss the value of conceptual and emotional assumptions of painters other than oneself; 4. identify one’s own developing artistic assumptions; 5. paint subjects of several genres, including still life, landscape, figural, and nonrepresentational art. Expected Outcomes for Students: Upon completion of the course, the student should be able to: 1. demonstrate advanced usage of tools and techniques of painting whether working in oils or acrylics; 2. name and skillfully replicate several specific perspectival strategies to alter a two-dimensional picture plane into an illusionistic three-dimensional space; 3. express a deeper, more thorough appreciation of the value of the conceptual and emotional assumptions of oneself and painters other than oneself; 4. skillfully paint subjects of several genres, including still life, landscape, figural, and nonrepresentational art. Student will apply advanced application of tools and techniques of oil and acrylic painting 2. Student will use advanced perspectival strategies while creating their paintings 3. Typical Assignments a. Paint a series of paintings (2 to 4) that visualizes a personal, emotional outlook. These pictures should have common themes and similar images, yet be different paintings; therefore, teaching the student to develop multiple answers to a single theme or idea. b. Connect and relate historical imagery with the your own personal themes and concept. c. Using a San Francisco gallery map: by next class, visit 10 galleries showing paintings. 2. Methods of Evaluating Student Progress: a. Assigned projects, comprehension and applications of the terms and concepts of each project b. Classwork c. Student output d.
