Tuesday, August 30, 2011 Room 505 Giving everyone a chance to grow (this document is both a newsletter and summary minutes) Present: Frank Ramos, Lisa Carlsen, Christina Mendoza, Rick Moniz, Janice Golojuch, Kathy Kelley, Matt Kritscher, Mark Schaeffer, Agnello Braganza, ValJean Dale, Catherine Powell (co-chair), Jennifer Lange (co-chair). 1. POD Conference: Jennifer asked if anyone is interested in attending this year's POD Conference in Atlanta in October. This conference is the definitive conference in the arena of staff development, and the college generally sends 2 or 3 attendees. Those interested should contact Jennifer. 2. Overview of goals for student panel/review of summer planning: Jennifer shared a handout and reviewed the planning that occurred over the summer in relation to the Student Voices project, which is taking place in two parts. The first activity will be a student panel at the Sept. 27 Flex Day. The second activity is a video being undertaken by Sean McFarland. This video is themed around following a group of randomly-chosen students for the semester. The intent of the video is to shadow students to see what the barriers are, how they navigate the system, and how they get business done. It was suggested that parts of the video might be incorporated into the 50th Anniversary activities. The panel session will be from 8:30 – 10:00 in the Little Theater and will be divided into two segments: panelists discussing the talking points/questions that will be given to them beforehand (45 minutes) and then questions to the panelists from the floor (30 minutes). Jennifer also shared the Chancellor's Cabinet Position Statement of May 2011, noting that the document poses the issues of gathering information about our students that is connected to the purpose of the Student Voices project. We will invite the Chancellor's Cabinet to the presentation. 3. Recruiting students for the panel: Jennifer shared the ideas generated over the summer regarding the variety of students we hope to have on the panel in order to generate the richest representation of the student experience. We believe the best recruiting will happen from instructors on this committee contacting their students about this opportunity. Instructors can let potential student panelists know they would be (1) introducing themselves (background, etc) (2) have a list of the questions in advance (3) could be watching video clips and responding and (4) possibly be asked open questions at the end if there's time.
