Installing and Using Items on the CD-ROM
The following sections describe each product and include detailed
instructions for installation and use.
Adobe Acrobat Reader
Adobe Acrobat Reader is a helpful program that will enable you to view the
electronic version of this book in the same page format as the actual book.
To install and run Adobe Acrobat Reader and view the electronic version of
this book, follow these steps:
1. Start Windows Explorer (if you’re using Windows 95/98) or Windows
NT/2000 Explorer (if you’re using Windows NT/2000), and then open the
Adobe Acrobat folder on the CD-ROM.
2. In the Adobe Acrobat folder, double-click rs40eng.exe and follow the
instructions presented onscreen for installing Adobe Acrobat Reader.
3. To view the electronic version of this book after you have installed
Adobe Acrobat Reader, start Windows Explorer (if you’re using Windows
95/98) or Windows NT/2000 Explorer (if you’re using Windows NT/2000),
and then open the Windows 2000 Server Secrets PDF folder on the
CD-ROM.

In the Windows 2000 Server Secrets PDF folder, double-click the chapter
or appendix file you want to view. All documents in this folder end with a
.pdf extension.
Hotfix Control
Hotfix Control is an application that allows you to track which hotfixes and
service packs have been applied to a Windows NT Server machine. This
functionality is not natively provided by Microsoft Windows 2000 Server.
To install Hotfix Control, follow these steps:
1. Log into your Windows 2000 system as a user with administrative
privileges.
2. Copy the contents of the Hotfix Control folder on the CD-ROM to a
folder on your hard disk.
Double-click the hotfxctl.exe file to run Hotfix Control.
Ping Plotter
Ping Plotter is an application that traces packet paths across the LAN and
WANs by identifying each hop taken by the packet. It is also useful for
maintaining WAN connections by periodically sending out packets via the
Ping command.
To install Ping Plotter, follow these steps:
1. Log into your Windows 2000 system as a user with administrative
privileges.
2. Copy the pngplt_2.exe file from the Ping Plotter folder on the
CD-ROM to your hard disk.
3. Double-click the pngplt_2.exe file.
4. Complete the steps in the Setup wizard.
Micro House Technical Library (Demo)
Micro House Technical Library is a useful CD-ROM-based set of
encyclopedias that contains hardware-configuration information. This
evaluation copy of Micro House Technical Library includes only the
encyclopedia of I/O cards. Use this evaluation copy to determine whether or
not you want to purchase the full version of the Micro House Technical
Library.
To install and access the Micro House Technical Library, follow these steps:

1. Start Windows Explorer (if you’re using Windows 95/98) or Windows

Micro House Tech Lib folder on the CD-ROM.
2. In the Micro House Tech Lib folder, double-click MTLTrial.exe and
follow the instructions presented onscreen for installing the Micro House
Technical Library.
3. To run the Micro House Technical Library, select Start ➪ Programs ➪ MH
Tech Library ➪ MTL Demo Edition.
WinZip 7.0
WinZip 7.0, by Nico Mak Computing, Inc., is a popular file/folder compression
and decompression application. It is typically used to transfer large files as
e-mail attachments or on a floppy disk.
To install WinZip 7.0, follow these steps:
1. Log into your Windows 2000 system as a user with administrative
privileges.
2. Double-click the Setup.exe file in the Winzip70 folder on your CD-ROM.
3. Complete the steps in the Setup wizard.
