September 13, 2007 12 Noon, Room 1506 In attendance: See attached sheets Itemized List Discussion: Doug Horner (DH) distributed agenda and led project discussion. Minutes were distributed and discussed. The following points were made: The movers are doing a good job. Things have been going smoothly so far. It was noted that the contractor lay down space North of PE Building 2900 was interfering with the Fire Program. Concerned parties met afterward and came to agreement that by re-arranging some items adequate space can be made. It was noted that the faculty association was concerned regarding the decision of where chalkboards vs. whiteboards would be used. It was reported that faculty was being polled and that a process was in place to gain consensus. Diane Zuliani (DZ) has conducted polls among the faculty with the following results: Buildings 800/900 that are currently scheduled for whiteboards will remain as whiteboards. Building 300 will be changed to chalkboards. Building 500 – results are still pending. It was noted that the faculty are concerned that the buildings do not have operable windows. Dr. Carlson (RC) responded that current energy codes do not allow buildings with air conditioning to have openable windows because of energy waste. The only allowable way to have operable windows in an air conditioned building would be to have a switched interlink between the window and the mechanical system that would shut off the air if the window was opened. Such a system would be prohibitively expensive. Lecture Hall Standards A group of volunteers from the Facilities Committee was formed to establish standards for the design of Lecture Halls on campus. The group met with the Architects designing the new spaces on campus and then toured recently built lecture halls at the Cal State East Bay campus looking for best practices and current ideas. The group met and discussed all aspects of what a Lecture Hall should be. Those conclusions were summarized and minutes were distributed to the Facilities Committee. Chabot College Facilities Committee – Minutes September 13, 2007 Page 2 Signage Standards A presentation was made by the consultant Hanzal Morris regarding the development of our Campus Signage Standards. Some of the major points: The signs are campus specific and District branded (using the same style as Las Positas) Interior Signs – ADA compliant, changeable names Site Signage – Building identification (applied, hung, cantilevered) Way Finding – Maps of the campus, signs with directions Parking Lot – Directional, code enforcement, ADA all with an integrated look A PowerPoint presentation demonstrated examples of what the replacement and new signage would look like in actual locations. Parking Lots A presentation was made by the Architect tBP regarding the design and schedule of the new parking lots. Some major points: Lots A/B and G/H will be rebuilt beginning in March 2008, ending August 2008. A new boulevard entry will be created at the north end of campus onto Hesperian at the existing signal. The new lots will be linked by an interior drive so traffic does not need to venture onto Hesperian to move from one lot to the other. Two driveways onto Hesperian will be removed as a result. The improved safety is a critical component to this design. A new AC Transit stop will be created along the link drive. A new traffic signal will be installed at Hesperian also adding to improved safety. There are no improvements to “J” lot or to the drive along the tennis courts leading to “J” lot. Trees are currently being studied to maximize the number that can be saved in this project. The London Planes (Sycamore) and Oaks along Hesperian will be saved The Pines along Hesperian will be removed and replaced with more desirable species The Ginkos will be relocated. At Convocation Tom Fuller gave two tours of the trees at the front of the campus for those interested. There are concerns that parking will be inadequate during the renovation. Efforts to alleviate the inconvenience include securing off-campus parking and sequencing the parking lot work to impact users as little as possible.
