Summary of Facilities Committee
Poll Responses to date (11/25/13)
Building 100 Elevator Improvement Project
This was a short informal poll of Facilities Committee Members based on the following options:
a) I recommend that Chabot SHOULD pursue adding elevator improvements to the current project list funded by
remaining Measure B money, and prioritize this addition above that of any other additional projects.
b) I recommend that Chabot should NOT pursue adding elevator improvements to the current project list funded
by remaining Measure B money at this time.
c)
I recommend something else at this time ....(please do feel free to elaborate here about any additional
reasons other than (a) or (b) above!) For example, you might feel that we should not yet vote on this issue
until we know more about the options, and their potential costs.
I recommend Option C: something else at this time .... I think that we should take a look at what moneys we
have in measure "B" and look at the projects that have been on the books for some time. I know that
building 100 does need several renovations but what about 1600? Have we made the decision that we are
not going to do only one big project ie. Bio Lab? Personally I think that we need to spend the remaining
measure B money to affect as many students as possible. Is it possible to do three $8 million projects and
still do … a campus face lift? “
“I vote for Option C. [Doing something else at this time]. I do think we find out the costs of the options,
update the current elevator, new elevator inside the building, new elevator outside the building. Any
elevator must service the mezzanine.”
“It did seem like it would be a good idea to look into how much adding an elevator would cost and what it
would entail. Whether or not it should supercede other projects, that is what I am unsure about as I don't
know what other projects this would displace.”
“I vote for Option A.”
“As much as I would like to see a new elevator in the library, would making that happen wipe out all the
equipment funds to the college?”
“We should [pursue adding elevator improvements to the current project list funded by remaining Measure
B money, and prioritize this addition above that of any other additional projects.] ADDITIONALLY: we
should have a STRONG case for other projects that are dire necessities -- including an upgraded and
excellent BIO-SCIENCES building.”

“I vote Option B. [Not pursue adding the elevator to Building 100 at this time.] IF monies are available at
end, we prioritize this up the ladder. It will NOT be done for 500K. It will be well over $1M...once DSA
gets involved.”
“I vote for Option A. My recommendation is that Chabot should definitely pursue the elevator
improvements,…”. “That said, this should not be construed as a recommendation to take from B2100 needs
to bring it about. I'd think that to lower the scope the biology building project to accommodate this need
would be a separate initiative.”
“I vote for Option A.”
“Fund the Building 100 project with elevator, Building 1600 improvements and the Program Review
Equipment requests first. Set a max of $25K aside for roof prop materials and construction on Building
2900 as requested by Fire Tech. Be sure the signage project has the necessary funds to finish what was
started. Use whatever's left as the budget for the Building 2100 project. Review state matching fund project
opportunities to offset the cost of Building 2100 (much like we did with Buildings 1700 & 1800).”
“I vote for Option A.”
“ I do believe an elevator for the library is a necessity. However, we do need to proceed with caution.
$500,000 can turn into some amount much bigger due to other unforeseeable costs required along the way.
[L]ets keep the conversation going, do more study, [and] develop other plans/options.”
“I vote for Option A.”
Additional Feedback from Colleagues in Science & Math:
“Option B - do not renovate elevator (unless it does not meet ADA requirements if it is necessary for use by
students.)…. I think the 2100 building renovation is important to serving student enrollment and safety
concerns. We do not have enough lab classrooms to offer enough sections of the majors biology series.
There is currently a bottleneck in the majors biology series that slows our students transfer rate to 4 year
colleges. Also, several of the safety systems that are common to biology labs do not exist in 2100 emergency showers, working ventilated chemical/biological fume hoods, refrigerated cadaver storage , and
storage/biohazard laundering/changing facilities for students lab uniform clothing.”
“While I see it painful to pay for an elevator - if the current situation makes it difficult for students with
disabilities to use the library, I feel that must be addressed. If it is more of a convenience level situation that
would prohibit the new biology building, I would say not to address the elevator issue at this time, but
maybe have a plan for where it would be moved to if future funding became available.”
“I vote for Option B.”
“I vote for option-B provided the current bldg-100 elevator is "usable" for those with disabilities that make
difficult or impossible navigating the stairs. * For me, replacing Bldg-2100 is a priority.”
