Call to Order The meeting was called to order at 2:03 by committee chair Cindy Hicks. II. Approval of Minutes of December 7, 2004 MSC (Immisch/Hunt) that the minutes of December 7, 2004, be approved as presented. III. Other Revisions Math 32 Cindy asked whether the prerequisite should include “or Mathematics 55B.” It should. In further discussion Daryl Crew explained that Mathematics 54 is not being added as a prerequisite because it serves students not going on to Calculus. Needed: • Add “or Mathematics 55B.” to the prerequisite statement. Math 33, Finite Mathematics, 4 units As requested at the November 9 meeting, the Math subdivision explained their reasons for not listing Math 54 as a prerequisite for this class. It is felt that the course is on the Calculus-bound Mathematics Pathway and should therefore have only Math 55 as a prerequisite. Anita Wah distributed a chart illustrating the Mathematics Pathways being developed over the next two years. Physics 5 Tim Dave reported that this course was originally presented as Physics 4D. It has been renumbered to remove the appearance that it is a required part of the series. Discussion resulted in the decisions to 1) remove the DE statement until paperwork has been submitted and approved; 2) change the hours to 3; 3) re-title the class “Modern Physics.” (This will require a change to the program page.) Needed: • Change title to “Modern Physics” on Rationale, Abbreviated Course Description, Catalog Description, and Program Page. • Remove the DE statement from the Catalog Description. • Change hours to “3 hours.” Curriculum Committee 12-14-04, page 2 ENGINEERING Engineering 31, Plane Surveying, 3 units Remove from Catalog (replace with Engineering 32). Criteria to consider when reviewing AA Degree proposals Ron Taylor asked that the committee be sure to consider Board Policy 0010 when reviewing proposals to add areas to the AA GE. This policy is reproduced on Page 12 of the catalog under the heading Chabot College Educational Philosophy and Objectives Statement. Cindy reported on the work of the district-wide task force. She stated that LPC is very intent on an AA degree of 26 units; there was also the thought that the GE patterns for the AA and the AS degrees should be the same. Cindy stated that after the committee has reviewed proposals submitted and has edited for overlaps and other redundancies, the proposals will be posted on the web for campuswide review. The committee will then develop a proposal to be sent to the district-wide task force, which will consider both colleges’ proposals and develop a final pattern to be submitted to the Board. Curriculum Committee 12-14-04, page 8 Cindy voiced her belief that every area that is proposed should be critical to students’ meeting our values/goals for GE, not just “nice to have.” VII. Good of the Order Medical Assisting withdraws its request to place an English advisory on MEDA 70A and 70B. They will not add an AS option to the AA degree in Medical Assisting. Cindy and Rudy will relay to Jane the information that in the spring, the committee will be able to offer advice on how MEDA’s goals might be met and that the committee would welcome the opportunity to meet further with Jane to talk about her proposal and her suggestions regarding the curriculum process. There was discussion on the value of consulting with those outside of one’s discipline, including counseling. Cindy added that Spring is usually when the committee can offer advice and suggestions. Fall presentations need to be in final draft form. VIII. IX. X. Next meeting: January 25, 2005 The meeting was adjourned at 4:10 p.m. December 21, 2004, via email.
