During discussion, Cindy commented that she has some formatting suggestions that she has given to Lupe Ortiz to take back to Mickey Huff. She also questioned whether the annotated bibliography is complete enough. Patricia suggested that a generic proposal template would aid people who are proposing courses for American Cultures. Cindy referred her to the American Cultures section in the handbook. She said that we might work on a more useful sample in the spring. Patricia volunteered to work with someone on this project. Lupe agreed to help her. Consensus was that the course meets the requirements for American Cultures. Motion carried. Curriculum Committee 12-7-04, page 2 VI. Engineering presentation Bruce Mayer presented. Dean’s Checklist No changes suggested. Engineering 20, Engineering Graphics, 2 units Remove from Catalog (replace with Engineering 22). Engineering 22, Engineering Design Graphics 3 units New course (replaces Engineering 20 and 21). Advisories approved. Articulation Forms 2 and 4 submitted and approved. For articulation purposes, Denise thinks that this will qualify as a new course, rather than a revision. If she finds out differently, she will let Bruce Mayer know. It was noted that Engineering 20 is a prerequisite to Engineering 31. The prerequisite and prerequisite skills on that outline will need to be updated. Cindy obtained the committee’s approval to review and approve the revised outline. Needed: Prerequisite Skills should read, “None.” Rewrite Expected Outcome #2 to read, “use drafting/sketching instruments…” Revise Engineering 31 to reflect change in prerequisite. Submit to Cindy Hicks for approval. Include in final packet to Academic Services. Engineering 25, Computational Methods for Engineers and Scientists, 3 units New course, previously approved as Mathematics 25; also cross listed as Physics 25. Engineering 36, Engineering Mechanics – Statics, 3 units Number changed from ENGR 35; title changed from Statics. Prerequisites changed; Math 2 changed from a prerequisite to an advisory. Bruce Mayer explained that the numbering change for this course at Chabot allows LPC to keep the previous prerequisites for their course. Prerequisites approved. Articulation forms 2 and 4 submitted and approved. For articulation purposes, this will be a technical change. Needed: A rationale removing ENGR 35 from the catalog. Curriculum Committee 12-7-04, page 3 Engineering 43, Engineering Circuit Analysis, 4 units Number changed from ENGR 44; title changed from Introduction to Circuit Analysis. Engineering 25 added as a prerequisite. This change allows LPC to keep the previous prerequisite for their course. Prerequisites approved. Articulation forms 2 and 4 submitted and approved. For articulation purposes, this will be a technical change. Needed: A rationale removing ENGR 44 from the catalog. Engineering 45, Materials of Engineering, 3 units Engineering 25 replaces Engineering 21 as a prerequisite. Content review forms approved. Transfer Program and AS Degree, Engineering Combines the previous AS Degree and Transfer Program to better meet state requirements for program approval. Edna Danaher initiated a discussion about the change, stating that the current transfer program specifically states that it is not a degree program. Bruce explained that the current (pending) AS degree was rejected by the state. They suggested that to be approved the degree should more closely reflect transfer requirements. This revision is an attempt to comply with that request. Bill McDonald questioned whether all the courses included in the degree are necessary for all engineers; for instance, do mechanical and civil engineers need circuits? Denise was also concerned with the high number of units, stating that students can only transfer 70 units. Bill suggested designing a degree with basic core courses and options for the various engineering specialties. There was discussion on the difference between optional courses and options focusing on areas of emphasis. Bruce will rewrite the program page with input from Bill McDonald and bring it back to the December 14 meeting. Cindy asked that he include the statement, “This transfer program is designed to fulfill lower division requirements for the major. Please see a counselor for requirements of specific institutions.” Needed: Rewrite the program page according to the discussion above and bring it to the December 14 meeting. VII. Health, Physical Education and Athletics Presentation Debbie Budd handed out replacement pages to be inserted into the packet that was distributed earlier. Comments below should be applied to the replacement pages. Curriculum Committee 12-7-04, page 4 DENTAL HYGIENE JoAnn Galliano presented. Dental Hygiene 56A, Community Dental Health I, 1 unit Revised course content. Needed: Correct textbook to read, “…2000 or most recent edition.” Dental Hygiene 56B, Community Dental Health II, 1 unit Revised course content. Needed: Replace the Prerequisite Skills with the Expected Outcomes from the new DHYG 56A. Dental Hygiene 80A, Patient Management, 1 unit Revised course content. JoAnn stated that the Typical Assignments will be rewritten. Needed: Remove the Corequisite Skills section. Rewrite Typical Assignments. Add dates to textbooks. Dental Hygiene 82B, Clinical Experience Seminar II, 2 units Increases hours and units from 1 to 2. This change was a student request. It also increases the second semester units to 12 so that students qualify for financial aid without registering for other courses. No changes suggested. AS Degree, Dental Hygiene Changes degree from AA to AS. It was suggested that this might be offered as either an AA or an AS degree. After discussion, the discipline declined the suggestion. Discussion ensued on how Nutrition should be listed. The discipline feels that placing it above the degree listing in the Special Application section might make it less confusing for students, and also encourage them to take the course before entry into the program, thus avoiding scheduling problems later on. Edna advised that if the program is published as presented, then we must award degrees to students who petition, even though they have not taken Nutrition. Consensus: Reinstate Nutrition 1 and its footnote on the degree page (see Catalog pages 66/67). This results in a program total of 56 units. Patricia Shannon suggested Curriculum Committee 12-7-04, page 5 that offering the Nutrition class in the summer might help students avoid scheduling problems. Needed: Reinstate Nutrition 1 and its footnote on the degree page (see Catalog pages 66/67). Correct program total to 56 units MEDICAL ASSISTING Jane Vallely presented. Dean’s Checklist Needed: Baccalaureate Level column should say, “Yes.” Medical Assisting 70A, Clinical Skills for the Medical Assistant I, 3 units Adds English 102 as an advisory. Discussion yielded the opinion that this should be “eligibility for English 1A.” Discussion on the corequisite statement resulted in changing the statement to “Prerequisite: Health 51A (may be taken concurrently).” Needed: Change date at top of outline to Fall 2005. Change advisory statement to “eligibility for English 1A.” Submit a content review form for eligibility for English 1A. Rewrite corequisite statement to “Prerequisite: Health 51A (may be taken concurrently).” Medical Assisting 70B, Clinical Skills for the Medical Assistant II, 3 units Adds MEDA 75 as a prerequisite. Needed: Prerequisite content review for MEDA 75. Medical Assisting 71A, Administrative Skills I, 3 units Adds English 102 as an advisory. See discussion under 70A. Needed: Change date at top of outline to Fall 2005. Change advisory statement to “eligibility for English 1A.” Submit a content review form for eligibility for English 1A. After discussion, the following changes were agreed to: Needed: Add an AS option to the degree. Correct the course number of General Accounting to Business 7 Place the statement “an American Heart Association Health Care Provider Card is required for MEDA 73A” at the bottom of the outline as a footnote to both Health 70A and 70B. HEALTH Health 81, Emergency Medical Technician—Basic, 6.5 units Corrects outline by adding the Corequisite of Health 83. (The corequisite is currently listed on the Health 83 outline.) Needed: Remove “Corequisite: Health 500” from the outline. Typical Assignments: Remove the Lecture section and the headings “Reading,” “Skills Lab,” and “Written Assignments.” Renumber remaining assignments. Health 500, Emergency Medical Training, 0 units New course. Cindy asked whether Health 81 was the only corequisite course applying to this course. If not, she suggested adding another example, for instance Health 83, and rewriting the Corequisite Statement. Needed: Rewrite the Corequisite Statement to read, “Corequisite: Health 81, 83, or equivalent.” Add a content review for Health 83. At this point, Cindy tabled presentation of the Automotive Technology presentation to the December 14 meeting. NURSING Nancy Cowan presented. As time was short she requested that we review Nursing 53 and 73 and table the remainder of the presentation to the next meeting. Curriculum Committee 12-7-04, page 7 Nursing 53, Psychiatric Nursing, 4 units New course. Needed: Remove “Theory may be offered in Distance Education delivery format.” from catalog description until Distance Education proposal, checklist, and signed tracking form are completed. Articulation forms. Nursing 73, Intravenous Therapy, 1 unit Changes prerequisite from 4th semester nursing program to 3rd semester. Needed: Articulation form #2. IX. Good of the Order Kaaren Krueg reported that CAS will reinstate the following credit limitation to the revised CAS 55: “(Combined credit for Computer Application Systems 55, 61, and 88A may not exceed 12 units.)” Computer Science will not be deleting Computer Science 8 from the catalog during this curriculum cycle.
