Math/Science Presentation
CHEMISTRY
Chemistry 30A, Introductory and Applied Chemistry, 4 units
Modifications to clarify course content. It was suggested that Methods of Evaluating
Student Progress d. Tests might be too specific to allow flexibility in teaching
methods.
Needed:
• Consider removing “(typically one-hour, consisting of a mixture of multiple
choice and short answer questions)” from Tests.
Chemistry 30B, Introductory and Applied Chemistry, 4 units
Modifications to clarify course content.
Request to add to AA/AS GE requirements under Area B. Approved.
Needed:
• Consider removing “(typically one-hour, consisting of a mixture of multiple
choice and short answer questions)” from Tests.

MATHEMATICS
Math 25, Computational Methods for Engineers and Scientists, 3 units.
New. Cross-listed with Engineering and Physics.
Bill McDonald asked the purpose of this course. Bruce Mayer replied that many
universities are requiring a numerical analysis course rather than a programming
language. He will try to articulate the course and will check Baccalaureate Level on
the Dean’s Checklist.
ITS has agreed to maintain the necessary MATLAB software. It was agreed that the
prerequisite request needs only content review because it is in the same discipline
(Mathematics) as one of the cross-listed courses.
Form #2, CSU Transfer, submitted and approved.
Form #4, UC Transfer, submitted and approved.
Form #3, CSU General Breadth, was not submitted. Bruce will bring the forms to the
next meeting for approval.
Needed:
• Deans Checklist: Change Baccalaureate Level to “Yes”
• Submit Form #3, CSU General Breadth
Math 31, College Algebra, 3 units
Adds Math 54 or 54L as prerequisites. The prerequisite skills have been synthesized
from the outcomes of the prerequisite courses. The supporting content review form
lists the expected outcomes as they appear on the prerequisite course’s coutline.
Math 32, Calculus for Business and Social Sciences, 5 units
Increases units from 4 to 5 units. Bill McDonald questioned the rationale. He feels
that we may need to increase the units, but not for the reason given. Daryl Crew
stated that we are unable to cover the current course content in 4 hours. Bill replied
that we are requiring more from our students than CSU requires for a similar course.
He said that students may not be willing to pay for extra units that they may not need
at CSU. It was suggested that the CAN guidelines be reviewed in respect to this
course.
Cindy asked that the discipline review the outline to be sure that all the content is
necessary. If not, the outline should be revised. If the discipline decides that
everything in the course is necessary, they should provide a new rationale justifying
the decision. The revisions should be brought to the December 7 meeting for
discussion, with a vote on December 14.
Needed:
• Update outline or rationale per discussion above. Bring resulting changes to the
December 7 meeting.

Math 33, Finite Mathematics, 4 units
Catalog Description and Content revisions.
Bill asked whether Math 54/54L should also be listed as prerequisites. It was also
asked whether Math 31 should be a prerequisite to this course.
Cindy suggested taking the course back to the subdivision for further discussion.
Desmond Chun feels that it would be helpful to students and counselors to include a
chart showing the various math sequences in the Class Schedule. Cindy suggested
that a conversation with Counseling and the Enrollment Management Committee
might help develop such a chart as well as clarify student pathway issues that may
arise.
Needed:
• Resolve the questions above and bring a new outline and/or a revised statement
of rationale, and a chart showing various Math sequences, to the December 7
meeting.
Math 40, Concepts of Mathematics, 3 units
Adds Math 54/54L as prerequisites. No changes suggested.
Math 43, Introduction to Probability and Statistics, 4 units
Adds Math 54/54L as prerequisites. No changes suggested.
Math 54, Applied Intermediate Algebra, 5 units
New course. Dan Raveica asked whether this course is intended to replace Industrial
Technology 74 or Business 16. That is not the intention. Cindy commented that we
might want to change our Rationale form to say “consulted with colleagues in other
and affected divisions.”
Prerequisites approved. Form #1, AA/AS GE, Add Math 54/54L to the Math
Proficiency list. Approved.
Math 54L, Applied Intermediate Algebra With Lab, 5.5 units
New course. Cindy recommended finding a newer text. It was noted that this is not
necessary for articulation reasons, as the course does not transfer. Ming Ho
commented that he was unable to find an appropriate text with a later date.
Prerequisites approved. Form #1, AA/AS GE, Add Math 54/54L to the Math
Proficiency list. Approved.
Needed:
• Revise last sentence of Abbreviated Course Description to read, “May not
receive credit if Mathematics 54 has been completed.”

Math 65, Elementary Algebra, 5 units
Math 65A, Elementary Algebra A, 3 units
Math 65L, Elementary Algebra With Laboratory, 5.5 units
Prerequisite Skills section revised to reflect changes to Mathematics 105.
Math 105, Basic Mathematics, 3 units
Revised to focus on mathematics rather than arithmetic. It was noted that this course
is listed in the catalog as having Distance Education approval.
Needed:
• Add “May be offered in Distance Education delivery format” to the catalog
description.
Math 105L, Basic Mathematics With Laboratory, 4 units
Revised to focus on mathematics rather than arithmetic. No changes.
Math 500, Mathematics Laboratory, 0 units
No changes. Corequisites approved.
Mathematics Transfer Program and AA or AS Degree
Edna Danaher noted that the AS Degree has been approved by the state.
The change in the Engineering course numbers was noted. Ming thinks it was made
necessary by a conflict with LPC. Cindy suggested that changing the rubric might
result in fewer technical adjustments being necessary.
It was suggested that CSCI 14 be added to the list of Freshman Year options. The
Mathematics and Computer Science disciplines will discuss this.
There was discussion on whether including options which have prerequisites might
give the impression of a lower unit degree than actually exists. Cindy reminded the
committee that the options, with the exception of CSCI 14 and Engineering/
Mathematics/Physics 25, have already bee approved. She added that we might want
to develop a policy covering this issue at a later date.
Needed:
• Remove “Pending State Approval” from the AS Degree.
• Add CSCI 14 to the options list if approved by the discipline.
• Separate the items in the list with “or”
• Add the cross-listed courses (Mathematics 25 and Physics 25)

PHYSICS
Physics 4A, General Physics I, 5 units (revised)
Physics 4B, General Physics II, 5 units (revised)
Physics 4C, General Physics III, 5 units (revised)
Physics 4D, General Physics IV, 3 units (new)
The revised courses, with the addition of the new Physics 4D, extend the Physics
sequence from 3 to 4 semesters.
There was discussion on how this change will affect the physics requirement in other
disciplines, such as Computer Science. Discussion on whether the courses are sequential,
and whether 4C should be a prerequisite to 4D or if it might be taken concurrently. A
change in this area would also affect the Physics Transfer Program and AS Degree page.
How will changes affect our articulation with UC Berkeley?
Needed:
• Resolve the above issues and bring new outlines and program page as appropriate to
the next meeting.

Good of the Order
•
Diana Immisch reported that there will be no Library proposal this year.
•
November 19 from 2:00-6:00 p.m. the Library will host a wine and cheese party to
encourage full-time faculty to help weed the collection in preparation for new
materials funded by the bond issue. Staff Development funds are available for
adjunct faculty who wish to participate.
•
