Please get your paperwork to Patricia Posada by December 14. II. Minutes Norberto announced changes to the minutes of November 8. Because Title V allows Health 85 to be repeated as needed for recertification, the limit of “three times” will be removed from the course. It will now say “May be repeated.” MSC (Novak/McDonald) that the minutes of November 22, 2005, be approved as presented. III. Vote on Science/Math Proposal Bill McDonald asked whether the question of Math 54 serving as a prerequisite to Chemistry 1A and Chemistry 31 had been answered. Kaaren Krueg noted that Mathematics 65L was not included in the updates to Mathematics 65 and 65A. Consensus was to table the vote until the next meeting to allow these items to be addressed. Lupe Ortiz initiated a discussion on presenting the proposed Information Technology Competency graduation requirement at division meetings. The following questions might be included: • Should we have a competency requirement? • If so, how should we implement it? • What level of competency would we require? • Is the requirement being mandated by the State? • How much is it going to cost? IV. Applied Tech and Business Presentation (Part I—Business) Tom Clark introduced members of his division. Jan Novak gave an overview of the proposal and distributed a revision to the AA Degree in Business Administration, made in response to recent changes to the CSUEB Business program. BUS 1B, Principles of Accounting II, 4 units Request to offer in Distance Education hybrid (combined on campus and online) delivery format. It was noted that there are several requests to offer hybrid courses in Curriculum Committee 11-29-05, page 2 the proposal packet. Since the outlines are not being changed, and the DECSC has not yet acted, these are informational only, and no discussion is necessary. BUS 2, Intermediate Accounting, 3 units Request to offer in Distance Education delivery format. The plan to offer an online section in conjunction with LPC has been tabled. The added content covers material previously offered in BUS 5, Introduction to Peachtree Accounting, using different software. Request to offer in Distance Education delivery format. Desmond Chun questioned the lack of a basic computer literacy course such as CAS 50 or CAS/CSCI 8. The instructors do not think it is necessary, as this is basically an accounting class. Edna Danaher referred to the old and new Accounting AS degrees and asked whether students who had taken BUS 5 for one unit would now have to take BUS 6 for two units, making the total for the two classes three units. The discipline affirmed that this would be the case. Bill stated that a student who had already taken BUS 6 at one unit should not be required to retake it for two units. Dmitriy Kalyagin and Wanda Wong agreed that the one-unit BUS 6 would satisfy the BUS 6 requirement in the revised degree. After discussion, the discipline agreed to add BUS 1A to the advisory statement. Needed: • Correct the second sentence in both the Abbreviated Course Description and Catalog Description to read “Using software to process…” • Revise advisory statement to read “Strongly recommended: Business 1A or 7 or equivalent.” • Submit Advisory Content Review paperwork for BUS 1A. • Revise Special Student Materials to read, “Removable storage media such as USB Flash drives or floppy diskettes.” BUS 8, Payroll Accounting, 3 units New course. BUS 10, Business Law, 4 units Revised description and format. Request to include in GE Area A2. Discussion included the amount of writing required of students. Jan stated that her students are assigned six to eight papers, and all exams are essay. Bill doesn’t feel that the outline as written meets the criteria for A2. He suggested including a research component that goes beyond use of the textbook. It was suggested that Methods of Evaluating Student Progress c. might satisfy the need if it were specified as referring to written assignments. Needed: • Revise Course Content 6. to read “Agency law.” Jan will rework the outline based on the above discussion and bring a revision to the next meeting. Needed: • Revise repeatability statement as discussed above under BUS/WE 95. AS Degree, Accounting Revised to reflect changes in curriculum. There was discussion on the number of units and whether this many optional units are necessary. Dmitriy reported that the degree is based on recommendations made several years ago by the Accounting Advisory Committee (since disbanded) and on research of similar degrees offered at other colleges. MSC (Chun/Shannon) to extend the meeting to 4:15. AS Degree, Business It was noted that this degree is “pending.” To be published in the 2006 catalog, it must be approved by the state before the catalog deadline. There was discussion on the high units for this degree and the limited number of electives it allows students. The committee also discussed the wisdom of removing Business 17, Business Ethics, from the list of Management ethics. Dmitriy replied Curriculum Committee 11-29-05, page 6 that the subject of ethics is covered in many of the Business courses on the options list. The discipline does not feel that students need a 3-unit course devoted strictly to ethics. AS Degree, Retail Management It was noted that this degree also is “pending.” To be published in the 2006 catalog, it must be approved by the state before the catalog deadline. Certificate of Completion, Retailing Revised to remove Business 15. Certificate of Completion, Accounting Technician Presented as Certificate of Achievement. Certificate of Completion, Management Discussion on whether this certificate has been state approved. It was noted that this certificate is “pending.” To be published in the 2006 catalog, it must be approved by the state before the catalog deadline. Certificate of Completion, Small Business Management Revised to reflect changes in curriculum and increase marketability. It was noted that, because the certificate requires only 17 units, it does not need state approval. BUS 5, Introduction to Peachtree Accounting, 1 unit BUS 15, Business Correspondence, 3 units BUS 35, E-Business and E-Commerce, 3 units Request to be made inactive (the courses will be published in the 2006 catalog, but will not be offered.) BUS 37, Customer Service Skills and Concepts, 3 units BUS 41, Export/Import Operations, 3 units Curriculum Committee 11-29-05, page 7 BUS 82, Consumer Finance and Ownership, 3 units Request to remove from catalog. AA Degree, Business Administration Jan Novak reported that this change was precipitated by recently announced changes to CSUEB’s lower division requirements for a degree in Business. It also addresses the Business Discipline’s desire to include a general Business course in the degree. It was noted that the committee voted on May 3, 2005, to remove the term “transfer program” from the catalog. (Text from the May 3, 2005, minutes is listed below.) Needed: • Remove “Transfer Program and” from the degree title. • Remove the asterisk and footnote after Business 12. • Remove the paragraph beginning “This transfer program is designed…” At 4:40, Norberto asked that further discussion of this topic be tabled to the next meeting. Patricia Shannon asked the Business Discipline to bring information on how well this proposed degree meets the lower division needs of institutions other than CSUEB. V. Good of the Order None. VI. VII. Next meeting: December 6, 2005 Applied Tech & Business Presentation (Part II) The meeting was adjourned at 4:45 p.m. (From the minutes of May 3, 2005) XII. Defining “transfer major” notations in Catalog Initiating a discussion on the subject, Bill McDonald commented that from a counseling standpoint, it would be better to take the words “transfer program” off of program descriptions. Programs don’t transfer. Also, while courses in these programs may transfer as electives to some institutions, few will fulfill lower-division major requirements at all four-year institutions. The committee considered how this action would affect existing programs. Jane offered to suggest revisions to Pages 21-24 of the catalog to make them more helpful to students. MSC (Shannon/McDonald) to remove the words “transfer program” from all degree descriptions in the catalog, to strike the “Transfer” column from the chart on Pages 27-29 of the current catalog, and to change the heading of those pages to read “Degree and Certificate Programs.” The College Application for Admission and Code Sheet should be revised to conform to this change. The Office of Academic Services will put the catalog changes into effect and notify Deans and faculty of disciplines affected. Persons with questions or concerns should contact their Curriculum Committee representative. kk 11/30/05 c:\documents\word\curric\2005-2006\11-29-05.min.doc
