(Carried with one abstention.) IV. Social Sciences Presentation Lupe Ortiz presented the following experimental courses for the Quest program. It is the program's intention to convert these to regular courses in the next curriculum cycle. These are courses that were previously offered as noncredit. They are designed for seniors age 55 and older, and do not conflict with any regular courses at Chabot. The disciplines in which these courses will be offered have approved them. English 49.11, Autobiographical Writing for Publication, 1 unit Norberto initiated a discussion on the units/hours ratio. It was suggested that the course be offered as 3 hours laboratory, rather than 2 hours lecture. Lupe will discuss the load distribution with Marge Maloney. It was suggested to rewrite the Abbreviated Course Description and Catalog Description to read, “...presentation of selected topics...” Prerequisite Skills should read, “None.” There was lengthy discussion of the Assignments and Methods of Evaluating Student Progress section. Barbara will rewrite and bring back to next meeting. MSC (Matthews/Shannon) to approve the Social Sciences presentation contingent on corrections being made as noted above, excluding ECD 80. VII. Industrial Technology 94 Tom Clark distributed a packet introducing a new course and discipline, Professional Trades 95. This is a work experience class to be used in conjunction with apprenticeship classes. After discussion, it was agreed that rather than introducing a new discipline (Professional Trades) the course should be offered as part of the Industrial Technology discipline. Discussion regarding offering a 95 course without a 96 resulted in the decision to change the number to 94. Tom explained how the apprenticeship programs work. Apprenticeship students are required to have on-the-job training. Giving them the opportunity to also earn college credit for this training will help them to earn a degree and/or give them units that can be transferred to a 4-year institution. MSC (Shannon/Matthews) to approve the course as presented, with a title and number change to Industrial Technology 94. VIII. 2007-08 Presentation Schedule Kaaren Krueg will adjust the chart according to the practice adopted last year and publish for the next meeting. IX. Pilot of AS Degree General Education Requirements Norberto distributed draft forms for proposing courses for the Program-Level Learning Outcome requirement for AS Degree. He explained how the new requirement would be implemented and how the form would be used. Patricia suggested using a similar form for adding classes to the A.2. requirement. Ron noted his understanding that the plan is to pilot with Automotive Technology. He said that other disciplines doing the same thing would probably need to talk with someone who has gone through the process. Curriculum Committee 2-6-07, page 4 There was discussion on taking a requirement out of a major and shifting it to the GE listing. Norberto noted that this was brought as an informational item. Still to be developed is a cover letter explaining the discussion on double dipping. There are problems in the English and Behavioral Science majors. X. CSU Transferability Jane explained that we have the opportunity to add courses into the CSU transfer list during Spring. She asked whether we could approve articulation requests for Fire Technology and Interior Design during spring and get them on the list for Fall. XI. XII. XIII. Good of the Order: • Jan suggested that we spend a meeting talking about innovative curriculum development such as was presented today by the Social Science division. • Ron reported that there is a workshop at CCSF, from 11:00 February 20 to noon on February 21, focusing on their noncredit programs. There are holding 4 slots for Chabot. Interested individuals should contact Ron. • Ron stated that in the last couple of weeks there has been discussion on final examinations. Even laboratory-only classes need to have finals. We need to keep this in mind as we go through our fall presentations. • Ron and Norberto have been involved in discussion regarding to what degree we are going to align our curriculum with LPC. Ron is quite anxious to implement some type of software package. Jane added that we need a discussion on the “rules of the game.” • Patricia Shannon voiced her resistance to presenting and voting at the same meeting. She feels we need a week to digest the material before voting. Norberto said that we will develop a policy and put it in the handbook. Next Meeting: February 20, 2007. The meeting was adjourned at 4:05 p.m. kk 2/12/07 c:\documents\word\curric\2006-2007\2-6-07.min.doc
